Just because it is in print, people believe it has to be true Smile . The magazine journalist got his facts screwed up. Screw-U has also been called "The Wall", but I just checked the Unadilla site and they have renamed it "The Lucas Drop" WTF!!!!!!!

Note the "U" shape, hence the name.
Its a lot steeper in reality than it appears in the photo

I used to really look forward to Unadilla, then then the tractors came and tilled it up. Some years it really is slot car racing.

I believe the grading before the race started in response to the riders complaining about the rocks.. there are not that many rocks in the soil, just that the ones that are there are just the perfect size to get picked up by a knobby tire and flung into the face or hands of the rider behind you. Some pros ended up with broken finders from rocks and it started to become common to run hand guards at the Unadilla national... so they started tilling the soil and screening out the rocks before the weekend started. I think this is pretty much when the legendary grass track on day 1 started to go away.
