Ralph kept saying no rider had ever won their first race in the "premiere " class.

Never mind riders back in the early days, but how about mark barnett who if I remember right, had to beg suzuki to let him race supercross while he was in the hunt for the 125 mx title and then went out and won his first ever sx race in 1979.

How about Sebastian tortelli? I am thinking he won his first ever American sx.

Is my memory right or is it playing tricks on me like yesterday with my car keys?

Tortelli's win was in his second premier class race . He took 7th in a 250 main in 97. Barnett's first premier class main was Daytona in 78 where he took 6th. Gotta love the Vault.

Sebastian raced LA2 in 1997 and finished 7th.

His second SX was LA in 98 and he won.

Barnett raced Supercross in 78 and won his first SX in 1979. His 9th SX.

Maybe but I added the Barnett result in an edit haha . The Vault is such an awesome site. I love looking up all those old results.

Was gonna guess Bradshaw, and then I looked up his results. 3rd ever pro race was SD SX in ‘89, and he podiumed with a third. Then wins his second 250SX at Anaheim in ‘90. What a bad ass.

I can’t think of any. Kenny and Chad both won their first in a full time 450 season but had raced a few before that. Seb’s was his 2nd I thought? Quite a few 250 guys did it recently.... RD, Trey and AC.... Rd and Trey also got podiums in their first 450.

Wait, what about Hill. Didn’t he win minny 08 on debut after passing RD and reed went down?

How about 2009 when Josh Grant won the opener? Did he race any 450 races when he was still in the Lites class?? I can’t remember.

Grant raced Seattle in 08 on a 450, finishing 6th. He won his second ever 450 race at A1 in 09.

What about Marty Tripes?
For sure. Tripes won the first ever SX, The Super Bowl of Motocross in 72, so he's the record holder. He also is the youngest ever premiere class winner at 16 years and 10 days. He also won the 1973 Super Bowl of Motocross. The Supercross series wasn't officially started until 1974.

Josh Hill raced the whole 08 season in the 450 class. Dungey almost won that race.(it was Dungey's 3rd 450 class race).

Ok, since we're getting nit picky. While Reed holds the record now for starts in a main. Wasn't 1 based on a "provisional" vs actually qualified for?
Having said that, Reed is nothing short of bad ass.
I've had memory failures before but if so, one is kind of like a freebe?

Almost wanted to say Windham in '97, but I believe it was his second 250 race.

Dowd's too? Or was it that he was a 125 guy at the time?

Was he really? Was that because the 250 was crap at the time?

I just re-watched the race. Ralph said that he would be the 6th rider to win his first race. He says it right after hill passes Tomac.

True or not, it was quite the spectacle being there and watching him drag around that kite tail for the win.

Right? Reed and Stewart go down in the whoops and Josh must have drug that thing around for what, 4-5 laps? Remember him hitting a jump and the rear wheel locking up instantly. lol
