Same here. That arenacross was a blast. I think it was 2006 that I raced it. Went to the race 3 different years though.

I went in 2000 and I’m sure I bought a program but finding it may be difficult. I’ll let you know if it turns up.

I went the first year Damon Huffman won.

High point of the trip- playing blackjack with a drunk Mitch Payton for a short time, but some idiot industry bro at our table was splitting face cards, so I left.

I think I even saw EI Dave being escorted out of the MGM casino…🤣

With no monster cup or rbsr this year it would be cool to see the US OPEN back in mid November /December.
Yes I know, not enough time. But with some cash to win for the pros and an amateur event (no sx futures this year), we would definitely go.

Maybe Monster or Red Bull would toss in some cash.

Always enjoyed that race.

Little known facts regarding it and Engine Ice.

Tim Clark was one of the promoters at the time, be like 2001, and called me and asked if we wanted to be a part of it. Being a new business and hungry, I jumped at the chance. I bought a full page ad in the program.

Short time later I get another call saying they needed neck lanyards for the credentials, did I want to buy them.
I quickly calculate in my head, "I can make my own lanyards with my name on them and every rider, team manager and mechanic will have it around there necks and in every photo taken at the event"

YES

Worked out great. If you go back through the photos, that's the light blue with white print.

I was asked to do it again the following year and went to black with yellow print. I changed it because the white blended into the light blue too much in photos.

That second year, we were also asked to sponsor a new race for up and coming kids and I could title it the "Engine Ice Amateur Cup"
Rules were, every OEM could choose three (3) up and coming racers in their talent pool to face off. All on 125's
Was really an awesome event and race. These young kids busted their ass, because their future rode on it somewhat.

The trophy was a large Waterford Crystal Bowl. I read in an interview years later that Josh Hansen kept his on the living room table as a center piece. A favorite. Makes me happy.

In the history of Engine Ice and it's success, the US Open is a good part of the biography

Pj1 Mike Kidd AX series was a huge success. Riders made great money 2 nights in a row, I think Buddy made around 500k not bad for 4.5 months in 2000. Most races where sold out it’s actually a lot more exciting than sx.

Yep and everyone said Antunez and the arenacross guys were gonna smoke the regular SX guys on the tight US open track, didnt happen they got smoked and found out why they are riding arenacross and not supercross. Antunez and Gaddis and others made a good living when they were on the down side of their careers by rideing AX, Mike Kidd took good care of the AX guys and made sure they got paid.

About the only thing I like about getting old is that I have boxes and boxes of motocross and supercross history stashed away, I have the original program, stickers and dealer flyers for the US open from the first to the last years and most other memorabilia from 50 years of SX/MX racing. I need to start going through boxes and start organizing some of it, dealer posters race programs and thousands of stickers. I sell some of it every now and then and it always does real well on Ebay but ist fun to go through some of it and remember the races and so much stuff I forgot about all together. cool

And sx racers got smoked when they raced ax after sx season was done. Chad Johnson is in northern Wisconsin in 3 feet of snow. He gets a call to race Daytona on a bike he never road and finished 4 th. AX racers made a lot more money except for the top 3 in the premier class.

|

I don’t think any ax racers where invited to race at mgm. I was there the night after a Holyfield fight on a red eye lay over flight. Still had a lot of energy a night after the fight.

Lots of the top AX riders got an invite but only a hand full showed up including Antunez, Palmer, Jones. Antunez was the defending AX champ at the time and owned the series.

What was sad was when Mike Kidd sold off the series then it went down the tubes. Mike Kidd was and still is the best promoter and has passed that on to his daughter who is doing the same with rodeo barrel racing, it must run in the family. Anyone who can get the US Army to sponsor them to race flat track can sell sand to the Arabs. cool

Remember Rockford used to be the opening round. Always exciting and the 1st time anyone got to see the new bikes. Eron Ezerins always riding stock bikes and qualifying. Hoffmaster in 98 got a lot faster he borrowed Kristen R. Engine a 134 , lines came together he blasted my foot. I dropped down to 125 b at Byron Chad Johnson team green trained by Jr Jackson was perfect everywhere. 02 ax race on yt has Chad doing a super quick pivot off a corner battling Wiloh his team mate on TUF Honda the oldest privateer team.

Great memories for me. Had a blast. My son with Chad and my son passed away in December 6 days before his 19th birthday due to COVID side effects, so very fond memories. Enjoyed the racing and the ability "get close" with the racers. Better than MEC in my opinion.
