I was lucky enough to be at Budds Creek last weekend. Aside from the heat, I had the time of my life. The track was amazing for spectating, and witnessing Eli bring home the 3peat was something special.

One thing that stood out was the smell of the two stokes. My brother and I were joking about how the sound and smell of the All Star race would get us hyped up to go racing. The sound was certainly there, but the bikes smelled completely different! I've never smelled anuthing like it in my life. Is the fuel really that different in the US than in Europe? I have honestly never smelled anything like it.

when i was riding in California even the pump gas smelt different. I noticed the fuel smelt similar in France and Spain as well, i think it's something to do with the additives in it, maybe for the hotter temp ranges?
I also remember the race gas being a smell i've not smelt before. Krocs KTM 250sxf on race fuel was something else!

Those bikes were probably running VP C12 mixed pretty rich with some Klotz or castor 927. It's worth burning some brain cells to smell that stuff! Nothing compares to sound/smell of a 2stk.

RV2 runs that VP MS95PRO or what ever it is. I'm sure most of the fast guys are running that as well.

I never really get that "sweet" fragrance with C-12 and 927. I do get it some with T-2.
And the teams are probably running some more exotic stuff.

I think it comes from, among other things maybe, oxygenated fuel, which C-12 is not and T-2 is.
Of course, I'm no chemist so I could be wrong.

Someone should make a cologne out of that smell perhaps?

The fuel they ran when I raced the two stroke nationals was VP MRX02. Completely different smell and about $170 USD per 5 gallons.

That was the smell of Shell Premium 91 coming from mine.

Klotz and Maxima? I would've thought it'd be Motorex since most of 'em are running KTM/Husky. I've recently tried the Castor in my 250SX and not too stoked. I'll be back to Motorex as soon as I run out.

I’m about to crack a new can of C12 open and mix up some Motul at 40:1 and crank up the ole 06 KX250 for the first time in a year... I’ll let you know how she smells

It’s not motorex. I’ve ran both motorex and klotz in my Ktm and motorex comes nowhere close as far as smell.

I’m using Castrol A747, smells yummy.

I ran Yamalube, then Maxima Super M, then Lucas but when I got to Klotz R-50 I found my soulmate.

I spend a lot of time on the turn track just to smell my own exhaust.

I remember racing in the 70's and an occasional four stroke would be out there and everyone was commenting how cool the lone thumper sounds.

Anyone try those 2 stoke candles? Are they even close?

I think Castor 927 smells best in 125s and 150s. Maybe it burns a little cooler or slower in 250s so you don't get the full effect?

Kinda like it’s worth losing some hearing going to see a Tool concert 🤘🏼

The old Cam 2 gas that smelled like candy was the best with Klotz. It doesn't have that smell anymore.

Jnr Karts typically run a castor based oil. Snr Karts normally use full synthetic oil. You can smell the jnr Karts. I reckon It's the castor.

That smell was also more common in MX yrs ago, 70/80's. when castor based oils were the norm.

The smell of the 2 stroke is done on purpose. It was a marketing thing in the 70's They knew if you got a whiff of it you would want more. The same concept Burger King has done for years.

|

8/24/2019 11:04 AM

I was trail riding behind a ktm running motorex and it was the worst smell ever.

I have. Not perfect, or close to perfect. A slight resemblance but that is enough for me.
