Where was that? I see a big soccer field not being used as floor space and that's odd.

I think there was a story from David Bailey talking about this triple. One rider started doing it and and everyone HAD to do it.

rick johnson

unlike the dialed in math for triples today, these were gnarly ascents with steep, unforgiving landings. not to mention what it takes on a two stroke, full on, to make that. probably one of the first 10-20 moments like this in the history of the sport.

pioneers. major respect.

You mean the rider standing trackside right? Looks sort of like Jonny O, but not sure.

Not Johnny; that rider has Axo gear on. Not sure who it is.

Impressive. Triples were still for the most part 3 jumps that weren't necessarily meant to be taken all at once in 85. The basic template for today's sx tracks was still a few years away.

Amazing for what reasons ? The riders were bad ass and the bikes were pretty good around that time. I'm assuming the OP did not follow sx racing at that time?

They went very big back in the 80s. I remember standing outside in Sun Devil Stadium to get in, in '87, and all you could see above the stadium wall was RJ and the other guys appearing now and then. Everybody was in awe. They were going as big as you could possibly go on those bikes.

RJ is on a basically stock suspended yz, nothing more than on ohlins on the rear and a anti-cavitator kit in the forks! Man that is a bad ass photo!!

That landing is hectic.

Crazy watching older SX vids, so much more technical than what there is now. There's bigger rhythms but the steepness of all the ramps isn't the same.

Oldest trick in the book, wear your gear to the race as a spectator and walk right past security and go wherever you please.
