Completed this portrait over the weekend of the late Marty Moates, pictured at the 1980 USGP at Carlsbad, where as a privateer he shocked the Motocross world by winning the USGP.
Back in 1978 I met Marty at Farleigh Castle when he came over to ride a KSI Thumper in the British Motocross Grand Prix at Farleigh Castle, Wiltshire. Marty had a flamboyant style, riding the under powered Honda engined KSI with great effect against the world’s top riders. Chatting to him in the paddock he was such an easy going friendly guy, having the time of his life in Europe!
I painted this portrait in a loose style, mostly using palette knives and very little brush work. It was only this morning when I was googling Marty’s name that I learned it was 3 years ago yesterday, December 7th 2006 that Marty left us.

I hope he would have liked this tribute!

Thanks for all the great comments, glad you appreciate my work. Originally I hadn't thought to do prints but judging by the responses, here and in Europe, perhaps I should release a limited edition giclee of this portrait?

I was thinking of making it an exclusive run of just 23 prints, Marty's number that he rode on at Carlsbad.

Let me know asap if you want to reserve one?
My direct e-mail is robakinsey@hotmail.com or post on here. Price will be approx $75 dollars.

Wish I would have the pleasure to meet him, never heard nay a negative word, which for our short time here on earth cannot anything finer be said about a man. So glad got the chance to meet / mingle with Bimbo, as being a Bultaco nut he was a god to me, just a super cool dude.

Beautiful portarit.

Marty was an absolute legend when he raced in Australia for a couple of years. It is an honour to have been at the same races as him. He really raised the professionalism of the sport in Oz..

Before that he made Ossa's look cool. I knew they weren't that fast, but I wanted one anyway.

Just got back from my printer, having approved the giclee artists proof. Looks really good and should be able to ship out prints on Tuesday. There's only about 12 prints left unspoken for, so e-mail me at robakinsey@hotmail.com if you want to reserve one!

Rob, put me down for two -- gotta get one for myself and one for Eric Johnson for Christmas!

That is an extraordinary painting that really captures Marty's engimatic personality: He was confident yet conflicted, as we would all find out in hindsight, and tragically so....

Davey,
Reserved 2 prints for you and Eric. Scott Cox also ordered another 4 so only about 6 more prints available.
Thanks again for your kind words on my painting. I like how it captures Marty's character, on the start line of the USGP moments before his biggest victory. It's like he almost cant believe he should be there.
I'm in talks with a close friend of Marty's to hopefully purchase the original and present it to his daughters, who have seen and love the painting!
