I've found that doing a little bit of everything- (Cross-Fit, Concept Rowing, MTB, Schwinn Airdyne, Jogging) Helps in your recovery between motos, but nothing compares to just putting in the laps.

Most of us who are deep in our Vet yrs (I'm 47) struggle just to find time to ride.

One of my favorite routines is to do 45 min on the Airdyne, and every 7 min, hop off and do 10 burpies. The burpies break up the workout, and the time seems to go by a bit quicker.

You can go on RacerX and check out the Virtual Trainer.. Lots of good info there. The key is to realize we're not Pro's, or aspiring Pros. The workouts are to keep us safe, minimize mistakes, and make our track time as enjoyable as possible.

Good luck- Find that happy balance-

There’s a really good point made in there....

Train for you and your body. At our age and after the years of abuse that some of us have thrown at our joints & bones, we don’t need to do some of the things that “ain’t good” for some of our joints/injured parts.

For example: my running days are OVER; so, I bike for my endurance/cardio. My knees “ain’t got no runnin left in them!”.

Another thing about being an “old guy” (or gal) that rides Moto: go get that problem area/joint/pain DEALT WITH. I’ve got stem-cell/PRP coming this summer right after Mammoth. My inner-knees are pretty beat up (bone on bone) & it’s time to do something about it.

Another point that SuperD nailed: NOTHING compares to getting some laps in. Nothing.

Believe it or not... Pilate`s, planking, sit ups, low weights, rowing, and road cycling have helped me a lot... I have broken femur on left leg, and tib/fib on right leg, so running is out of the question. I mix these up through out the week, and it has helped me a lot. I do enough different things, that i rarely get bored.

Fuck all... rock up and race, training brings expectation, i just rode for the first time in 18 months, 4 laps of practice and 6 12 +1 races. Hadnt even ridden the bike.

Pilates is that better than yoga ? I don’t know what planking is. I don,t hv to worry much of breaking bones, constant pounding from trucking. If I remember correctly, contract impact to your body strengthens bones.

I have certain music playlist that can keep my mind off of the time and I usually keep an eye on the Watt output. Otherwise, youtube a past race and watch it.
The problem with Youtube is I don't have anyplace to really watch it. I can put my iPad on my stationary bike but not on the rower so I can't watch anything. I also haven't figured out small challenges for myself like I do with the bike.

I put on some of my race videos to watch while "exercising". It's motivation because I get angry seeing my results due to not being in shape. That helps me push through the boredom on the rower!

Oh, well that's my plan when I start exercising again! LOL

If you have the rower at home, put something to side of it to place your Ipad on. The challenge is to better yourself from the previous row, benchmark the stats for time and distance at 10 minutes and every 5 minutes afterwards. If you just want to get a row in, then concentrate on strokes per minute until your done, you finish where you finish or change boat length to a foot longer and see how you do in 10 minutes. I use 6ft for the long rows and adjust to 7.5 or 8 for sprints and use 10 for the row until I am burnt out (staying below) 28 SPM not pushing over 30 SPM the whole time.

I agree on the ride, ride,X 10. I hv to get some muscle back into my legs, etc. alot of appointments, waiting on injection on my shoulder and back. The track I was a member at 1990 to when it closed in 13. Is reopened as a off rd riding park, layout is diff. Jumps are gone, little 1,s now, Up and down the hills, big step ups r gone. You can still jump and land on the down side. Finish corner by the scoring tower, is still there. Some riders say it was the best corner in the district, I was happy to see that. Denmark Mx on google the track comes up, 1 current vid. I can go ride there all during the week, not even 30 minutes away. yes

Back when I was in my prime ( 50+) my training consisted of running (not jogging) 5 miles a day and riding 3 times a day.

Spinning twice a week (actually I’m an instructor), Mountain biking and Moto. I do some lite lifting twice a week, but I believe cardio is the key for us older guys. Used to be a distance runner too but knees no longer like that.
As you get older be kind to your joints, you can keep your muscles and cardio in shape but you’re wearing your joints out every time you use them. Don’t be hero just be consistent. Just turned 65 last week.

I agree on not over using your joints. My cardio is just in the pool. Trying rest my upper body, except for sit ups, 1 time doing a kettle ball, I swung it left to rt to behind me, like a twist. Pressure on left then rt leg, do that to see if blood flow would heal my upper body faster. Did that for 20 minutes, fast with intensity. Listening to Pennywise.

...There is no amount of training that will help as quickly as riding the motorcycle on the roughest track you can find.

I ride three times a week, 4 20 minutes motos each ride because I'm training for mammoth and I want one of those wooden bears this year, and it is killing me, this shit is so hard.

Last week driving home from Glen Helen I felt like I had been on the losing end of a fight with Mike Tyson. This is not fun anymore, it's become a quest.

BUT my fitness is good, and I can keep my lap times within one second from start to finish every moto I ride. Riding the motorcycle this much is brutal on an old man like me, but it sure is the best way to get in racing shape.

With 4 lap races riding your dirtbike 2 times a week is all you need. If you are going for big races, hot, long duration, ride your dirtbike more. All that other stuff mentioned is great too, but at 50+ rest and recovery is most important. Light workouts and stretching and RIDING.

I usually race 2 classes. What do you think of racing 3 classes ? 50 plus, 40 A, 125 class for fun mostly 125 jr kids in it.

Man, Just turned 46- Still running but Ive noticed its harder to keep the lbs down and I'm creaking a bit. In my experience a consistant cardio routine and at least one day a week of seat time will keep you competetive. I just bought a bike last year, only rode it one time. I have so much going on it seems but I miss that rythm and look forward to getting it back-

Does nerkin heads and death wish, mean it’s a bad idea. Not sure why hardly anybody races 250 a anymore. #1 in points only raced 3 times 63 points. I could sign up for that, 100% payback. So racing 250 a class is free.

In advanced ages..." If you don't use it you will loose it"... Cardio and bike time are the best. If you back off any, you will the difference in very short order and then it is twice as hard to get back to that level. Keep it up and you will be enjoying riding well into your 80 as my friends have. Also one of them uses boxing for cardio when his legs will not let him run.

I went to a deep sand track race sun, a 50 plus rider won his class , raced the 125 class also. He,s has a few national championships on snowmobile. Anyway my legs are getting stronger. Last thurs I stepped it up, worked them till my legs couldn’t do anything. Sat just a little leg workout. Teus night again, after my covid shot. Aprox 1,800 sit-ups 2 different kinds, weird I Love the pain from sit-ups. Weight down to 171, mostly due from resting upper body. Getting some muscle knots relieved, long way too go. I think 165-168 lbs is possible.

Sorry off topic but how do you like the levo sl? I’ve been heavily debating buying a new bike next year or an ebike, never thought that would be a decision I’d be debating but they seem so fun

I’ll start with I was a full on hater and talked smack on ebikes
“I’m not old enough to give on real work blah blah blah”
Then I rode in on pace for about 50’ ft got off and cussed my buddy.
he has the Turbo levo with the bigger battery and motor. I wanted a bike as close as possible to my Carbon Stumpjumper.
This bike is it. It weights in about 36lbs
I did spend a few bucks on carbon rims, cranks, bars and change the suspension.(just like Moto)
For me it’s not about the current ride it’s about I want to ride again the next day or at times a second ride at a different spot the same day.
For a touch point my Garmin shows an average Heart rate of 130 and peak 165 on my 14-17mile loop.

Training for a 5 lap race in the Vet 50+ class has the same effect as adding a Ti exhaust to your bike and expecting to drop your lap times

50+ ? (My age group)

Training isn't allowed. That's part of the benefit of being in that class!
