Watching the CBS coverage of Houston, they talked about how many champions were trained by Aldon Baker. As a trainer, I have always been bothered when trainers get or take credit for a top athlete’s abilities. RV was already a top level rider. Think about this:
Endurance- Cardiovascular Training/ Technique. You can ride a bike hour after hour, but if you have poor technique you will use more energy than rider with less cardio fitness and better technique. This also is true for strength training. Technique is paramount.
Mental- The ability to read a track/race. Most riders will go full throttle in the worn race line, but is this the fast line? What happens when you are passing for position. The ability to read a track, knowing where and when to be cautious and when to run all out. Not letting a mistake in a turn or the whoops, carry over to the next obstacle or lap.
Equipment- Top riders get the best.
Cost- The top riders can afford a Trainer. The mid pack to qualifiers need to buy tires.
All top athletes have these factors working for them, in every sport. NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL. It is rare to have all of these abilities and have the deciding factor,
Desire- Take what you have and excel beyond your abilities.
And my absolute favorite- Have Fun and Smile. Life’s Great!
