There was a tragic crash involving a rider and spectator on June 9th at the Barona MX track Lakeside,CA. The rider lost control, crashing off of the track and into a spectator standing nearby. Both men were critically injured and were airlifted to Sharp Memorial San Diego where both underwent emergency surgeries. Rudy of ProPrept Motocross was the spectator and is improving while still hospitalized. Tragically, however, the rider was not as fortunate. The rider Rene Torres suffered chest, abdominal, and hip injuries. Rene passed away Thursday evening from kidney failure.
I was at the track but did not see the crash. Rene's son and my son are fast friends and ride together often. That is how I got to know Rene. We were both fortunate to be able to share this sport with our boys until this tragedy. I've ridden with Rene on many occasions. He was a cautious rider. One of the few guys on the track I could pass...for a lap or two. Then when I was busy trying to catch my breath trackside, Rene would click off another 10 laps.
Neither of us carried the track speed to clear the Finish Line jump at Barona. I can guess that he got out of shape at the top or on the way down from the Finish Line jump and whiskey-throttled over the berm at the bottom of the jump where Rudy was watching. It was very busy at the track and I understand that Rene may have been on an unfamiliar bike at the time of the crash. These factors may have contributed to the crash, I do not know. Regardless, the result is devastating.
Rene leaves behind a wife and two sons. His wife has allowed me to start a GoFundMe campaign on their behalf. I would be so very grateful if you could please visit the GoFundMe page and help share it with our community of riders.
