I've been eyeing up a new 450, but need to get rid of my RM250 first. I've had it for sale for a couple months, but just keep getting scammers and bullshitters. Does anyone have experience with trading in an older 2 stroke that's not worth much to begin with? I'm asking 1500 for it, if they'd give me 1000 I'd be more than happy just to get it off my hands.

Damn you should be able to sell an RM 250 for $1500 easily unless it's a huge turd. And if it is, a dealer won't even want it and probably won't give you anything on trade.

What year is it?

2001. It's pretty clean other than the bottom frame rail has a pretty nasty dent. Bone stock, nice bike. Not a very big moto scene around my area.

Similar bikes on craigslist are asking 2500+ so I figured I could unload it quick at 1500. Guess not.

Put bike in truck, drive to dealer. Did that help?

Id put my bets on the dealer offering you $500 if they even want to take it at all. Youll be better off selling it on craigslist even for $1200. Dealers do not offer private seller value. They need to make a profit on it too.

Hell, at $1000 might as well keep it. If it’s a good rider it’s worth keeping around.

You know why motorcycles have handlebars? So you can hold on to them.

Just be patient. Go get the new bike. Wait for a buyer on the old one. I don't do Facebook, but a lot of stuff sells on there these days. Craigslist is not as popular as it was.

I’ve had much better luck with Facebook Marketplace than craigslist recently. Plus, that way you can see who you’re dealing with. Helps prevent scammers.

The problem is you’re not asking enough for it. People see it at $1500 compared to the others at $2500 and just assume your bike is inferior in some way. Stick your bike on there for $2300 and include the words “reduced price” and “must sell” and “make offer” and I bet some low baller will come along assuming you’re hurting for money and offer you between $1000 and $1500 thinking he’s gonna flip it for $2200.

ahh so that's why you can't find a bike around me for less than $2k. People around here are nuts, they post something like a 99 cr80 for $2500. "Runs great, starts up first kick, just needs new plastics, top end, a few spokes are missing/bent..." Everyone thinks they've got gold.

And then they get mad when you offer them KBB or NADA value

I hope the seat is comfy on that RM, because you're going to be bent over it if you take it in to a dealership to trade in.

Threw it up on a Facebook page and it was gone in 2 hours. That's the last time I try and sell a bike on Craigslist.

Sometimes things work out. Good for you buddy.

Great to hear man. Craigslist can be hit or miss. I just sold my KTM 300xc on Craigslist about 2 months ago. I didn't have any interest off Facebook but had a few people interested off Craigslist. I would always do both.

Never trade a bike in at a dealer. They have to low ball you to get enough room to check the bike over and fix it enough to resell it to break even or make a slight profit. Transaction costs, etc. It just never works. Sell it privately is always the way to go. It's a PITA too, but financially it is the best way. Glad you could sell it. I recently tried offerup and got some hits, but really similar to CL. Lots of low ball offers, tire kickers, etc. Eventually you find the right buyer if you stick to your guns and sell it at the right price (don't be stupid high and don't drop your shorts when you get an offer). Eventually it works out, just have to be patient.

Glad you sold it. My advice was based on the fact that Craigslist seems to have become a cesspool of low ballers, time wasters and foreign scam artists. Create the illusion of a certain value by pricing it stupid, and then let the low ballers think they “won” by getting it for half price and send them down the road. What new 450 you looking to get now that it’s sold?

Yeah I think you make a good point about pricing high just to work it down. Probably could've gotten a little more if I tried that.

Found a nice deal on a 18 CRF. It'll be my first 4 stroke, and first new bike since my Honda 70 when I was a little kid. 2 stroke junkies don't freak out, I still have my CR125 that's not going anywhere.
