What toolboxes do you guys use that can handle being moved around from house to the track and back? I have a craftsmen plastic top, metal drawer box that isn’t that great, the drawers have opened up due to the trailer bouncing from time to time and I lost tools. Anctious to see what you guys suggest.
Thanks
Ben

I just ordered a Matrix M70 5 drawer Team Box, I don't have it yet, but it looks cool!

Chain lube, extra brake levers and a set of t-handles are NECESSARY! I also bring a can of keyboard cleaner as well as a bolt kit.

I have a breaker bar and vice grips as well just in case.

i cut some foam out and put it in a 50qt container and made 4 levels to fit all my tools in, cost 20 bucks.

what i bring, t handles a small ratchet set, beaker bar, levers, chain lube, a shifter, bolt kit, fuel line a extra oil filler plug different screw drivers, and a magnet.

On race day, i will put my rolling tool box in the trailer a cooler all my lubes, oil, every cleaner, a spare 125 engine i got cheep and rebuilt, some grease and like every tool ever made, and last an impact.

I keep a vintage carpenters box in the truck all the time, so that's usually all I bring to the track. If I'm bringing more I'll use a Milwaukee packout rolling box. It holds a lot and rolls good in the dirt. Also makes a decent seat.

I have everything needed to frame a bike in here. The box was maybe $40 at Lowe’s and is all plastic other than the clasps.

I used to use the same metal drawer / plastic top Craftsman as you, and had the same issue with the drawers after a couple race seasons...

Upgraded to this all metal Craftsman.. when fully loaded it can get rather heavy so it usually stays in the garage and I bring a small toolbox with just the essentials. The metal one shown here can be the top tier to a large 3 tier rolling cabinet set too, if you wanted that for the shop then just take the top tier “to go”. I’m so bad about grabbing way more tools than I need “just in case”

That box is perfect, the basic tools for any bike fit in there.

I have a 3 drawer Craftsman metal that I have had for about 17 years or so. It's handled everything. I thinned some stuff out of it a while back to lighten it up but being only 3 drawer it's not too bad.

New boxes aren’t built like old one are. Guess I’ll have to go to some yard sales this spring ?

Just curious, why are you guys bringing breaker bars? What am I doing wrong that I have never used a breaker bar?

And yeah, I second JBecker72. That's basically my setup.

Yeah I’ve got one of these I have to have been using for 15 years at this point. The drawer faces are all bashed in or bent out from being slammed around and overloaded over the years, but I’ll be damned if the thing doesn’t still lock up and hold tight. My one gripe is that the bottom is open, so I have left it out in the rain and the bottom drawer got waterlogged and full of sand, but that’s user error lol.

metal boxes are obiviously the most durable but they are hard(er) to find in small sizes and typically the weight makes them a PITA to load/unload.

I would recommend a contractor grade plastic box that has wheels and a handle for rolling and loading.

I would also recommend spending the time to go through your owners manual and identify each tool that could be needed to make common repairs. I'm guilty of this as well but so often you see a tool box filled with shit and only a small % of the tools actually get used. Pack light and add tools to the box as they are needed!

Do the drawers stay closed once the lid is shut? Have they ever opened up during your travels?

I don’t always need it to get the rear axle off but sometimes that sucker won’t move. Just precaution.

I got a $60 4 drawer toolbox from Menards that works great! Very similar to this box, but mine is black, slightly bigger, and made by Performax. They hold A LOT. And they can get pretty heavy but it holds all my stuff. I have a socket set, wrench set, tire spoons, nut/bolt kit for my bike, and everything else mentioned here. I'm surprised nobody mentioned having extra tire tubes and bead locker. Makes changing tire tubes way easier.

I got the Sonic Troy Lee box and it's been awesome. I bring that, t handles, tires spoons, latex gloves and my torque wrench.

Not a terrible amount of tools and it handles any track duty.

At home, pretty much just have my suspension and motor stuff on top of that.

I’ve been using a bag for years. Just picked up a new one from harbor freight for next to nothing. Pretty light and can hold everything needed to frame a bike.

Use the top box for parts, the middle box for tools, and the bottom box for fluids/ filters/ funnels.
Has wheels so it easy to move around.
The lids are sealed to keep out water and dirt. Use the big box as a step into the back of the truck.

I’ve been thinking about trying out a setup like this.

This is what we use:

Also using koolaid containers for nuts/bolts helps keep it organized vs them just being crammed in the top parts. We keep a few long screw drivers, small ones and a strip of sockets in 90% of the metric range. Zip ties, chain lube, brake fluid, an extra lever or 2, allen wrenches. Spark plugs in an old bungie cord container, a rubber mallot, and the #1 MOST IMPORTANT thing you ABSOLUTELY can not forget is DUCT TAPE (preferrably Shurtape 857).

Plano 823-003 Contractor Grade Po Series 22-inch Tool Box, Graphite Gray https://g.co/kgs/K5MnMZ

Been running it for about 6 months now after a plastic Craftsman fell apart. So far already holding up much better. Don't want to jump to a big heavy steel box if I can avoid it.

Damn you guys have some sweet ideas. I'm the asshole that goes to my buddy and borrows a tool when needed (always return it) but I've been looking into keeping a toolbox with me for race days! You guys make me jealous with these setups
