He’s a world Champion that if he’d stayed in the GP’s, Everts would have half the titles.

Reasonable thought - I doubt the '99 CR250 did him any favors.

But the main thing that derailed his potential was Carmichael. That guy turned a lot of careers into "what-ifs".

Yep. RC and injuries.. Dude was a STUD either way. I posted in the memories thread the other day about standing on the fence when he ran out of fuel at Redbud. It was heartbreaking. That guy deserved that win.

Lots of IFs, but I 100% agree. Not that he was not prone crash prone on the kawi either, but a bit like Stew or MC, I think he was on a different level on a platform he knew eveything. Not sure a title was in reach either against RC, but closer battles were more than likely. So far I have never seen this kind of style, Herlings may be like this but he has also much more finess, Tortelli was using so much strenght just destroying eveything on the way. I would not have liked to be his practice bikes lol.

dont forget everts raced him on a honda in 98 so if everts stayed in kawasaki maybe he had 15 titles... same logic behind it!

First pro rider I ever saw ride. I was at Croom and he was there testing. He had that Cr250 pinned wide open the whole time through the giant sand pit. Dude was on another level for sure. Nice guy too. Very humble.

Don't think Everts' works Honda and Tortelli's production bike would have been the same...

Remember MC (and I believe Lammy backed it up) said he LOVED the 97 bike in pre-production testing... then Honda added ali everywhere to meet durability testing. Rode it again and said wtf happened, then left.

Good point.

Just to clarify, in my opinion, I think the Honda at that time was also better for super smooth riders. Like MC, Everts, Bolley, Emig, Lusk, Pichon, etc.

But not that great for hard chargers like Tortelli, Beirer, Demaria etc. With their style, not afraid to hit every bumps on the track, I guess a more stable and forgiving platform was more adapted.

Not that it matters, but around that time, I tested both highly modded 125 & 250 CRs, the first aluminium frame. On a nasty track, where I had to go through choppy minefields, I just could not ride it. It was a bit scary and really exhausting. I was moved up like a shaker and with violent engines, on/off likes, it was making things worse. But on a much cleaner track, then I could go fast, turn like a dream and throw the bike everywhere i wanted, much better than a YZ for instance. The 250 engine was great too, even had too much for me, a bit too violent to secure myself for jumps as it was too easy too overshoot 10 meters with just 1 too generous brap. These CRs were probably great on a SX or hard pack track with smoothen mod engines. I am also a bit biased as my favorite bike around that time was a modded 125 KX, a fast yet very easy to ride bike, one of those you feel it has been your bike forever after 3 corners (a bit like a 250yzf 2010).

Tortelli was handing Carmichael his ass first year in us outdoors. History may have been different if Henry not landed on him and broke his wrist. 1999. Anyone got footage of first few rounds?

Didn’t Seb have the points lead outdoors in 2000 until Red Bud, ran out of fuel?

Same here. While there wasn't racing, it was awesome to see these oldies, especially because back in the days I could not see all of them. Lots of great americans in GPs + lots of internationals in the US = almost a kind MXdN atmosphere each race !

I sincerely believe the classes should be redivided, each class should have its own event, it used to bring as many people if not more and there were more chances to have a race nearer. (+ purse money of course)

i agree, gp bikes were worksbikes while ama had production bikes so the cr 250 in ama was much more difficult. and like question said, it fitted more smooth everts than agressive tortelli. are you sure tortelli rode a production bike? i dont remember that and i find it rather difficult. im just saying everts was out of the zone in 98 and in 99 when he crashed and broke his arm i think. his 2 worst season imo apart from husqy 2000 but i have to say there were other things to bother him at that time beside cr.

You have to give him credit for trying. He wanted to race the best and he did. Major respect for Tortelli.

Tortelli was my favorite rider at the time - I see a lot of parallels with Tomac's style today.

Similar body types, ultimate corner speed (especially outsides), aggression over finesse.

They also tend to go about their business in a similar way. Outside the bubble, largely alone, minimal effort in trying to appear cool, 100% focused on their craft.

Ummm! Ezra just recently told Matthes in his interview that it was his favourite bike. Sometimes it would just bite him and he never knew why. Times he said it was unbelievably good.
