Anyone torn one clean through? What was your recovery like? How long until you could ride again?
My little brother fractured his tibial plateau and tore his meniscus...had surgery about 6 weeks ago...For those that have had a similar injury, how long were you off the bike?

I wish your brother a quick and total recovery, tell him diligent rehabbing and getting the legs strong is the key to success.

I tore my medial and lateral meniscus and ACL, as well as fractured a few small bones in my left foot, on July 3rd, 2016. I had surgery August 15th, 2016 where they did a hamstring graft for the ACL replacement and trimmed and stitched both sides of the meniscus. After surgery, i immediately began physical therapy 3-4 days/week. 4 weeks later i was able to begin stationary biking very slowly/carefully but it was super painful. 8 weeks post op I had enough confidence to ride my street motorcycle around carefully while wearing my knee brace (there's not much leg strength required to casually motorcycle around). Between week 8 and week 20, I focused a lot on road cycling as much as possible and just generally fighting through the pain while building leg strength up. I didn't feel comfortable enough to run until week 25, and even that was at a casual 10min/mile pace. I just kept up with my cycling, leg strength exercises, and stretching consistently after that. I didn't feel 100% confident enough to ride motocross again until about 44 weeks post op. In hind sight i probably could have got back on the bike sooner, but i didn't really want to reinjury myself by getting back into it sooner. I'm a software/database engineer by trade so my 9-5 M-F was spent primarily sitting in my office.
To this day my knee still doesn't feel 100% like my other knee does. I'll get aches and pains and burning sensations every now and then from the meniscus area. My left leg still isn't as strong as my right. But i do feel mostly confident in my leg and have no problem or fear dabbing it.
There are apparently clinical trials going on right now for a synthetic full meniscus replacement, and the feedback seems promising thus far. I'll probably opt for that in a few years to get my self back to 100%.
He’s been in a brace for 5 weeks now (moving his knee 10 degrees every day for the first four weeks...now moving it 20 degrees for the next four weeks).
The surgeon said that the bones should be healed in 6-8 weeks...but he can’t put weight on it for 12 weeks because of the meniscus. Then he starts PT.
What was your recovery like?
You are making me worried for him...
