I mean if Yamaha just throws money at you then sure. But it’s definitely the last bike/team anyone wants to ride for.

Uh ya, no shit. He went 24-0 the summer of 2008, right after he signed with San Manuel for 2009.

And Tomac went 5-0 on the CRF after signing with Kawi. Then the shoulder thing happened, sadly.

Doesn’t make much sense to me if Eli only plans to ride 2 more seasons given how sensitive he is to bike setup. It’s going to take him a season to figure that current YZF out and get comfy and then, assuming there’s a brand new bike the following season, it will take a while to figure that bike out. Hard to imagine he’ll find his groove over that period of time.

How big is the chance he tried the bike at his own property in Colorado?

Would he jump ships without even testing it..

I’d say that at this point in Tomac’s career, he knows that he needs to be collecting as much dinero as possible. And he probably knows that if the current Yamaha guys can podium on the bike, he should be able to win on it.

Kawasaki may have offered a more incentive based contract versus Yamaha offering more ‘guaranteed money’. That may be enough for Tomac to realize that he doesn’t want to have to go past his ‘comfort zone’ to be able to support his family and the larger guaranteed amount makes him more likely to be able to go home to his family in one piece.

Or it could all be vicious rumors and he’s back on green next season.......!

IF this is true I would say Star has given him a better option for a post racing career. See Villipoto and Will Hahn. Also, I would bet that Yamaha has a new bike up their sleeves for 2022 that Tomac will help develop. I would imagine he could be looking at a 1-2 year race deal which is a low stress development deal and then R&D development/ help with the team after retiring from racing.

Why does he need as much dinero as possible? The guy is set already. I'd rather have wins and championships, which ironically give you more money.

I don’t think that anyone is ever as ‘set for life’ as us mere mortals believe they are. There’s a lot to pay out to reach the level that Tomac has, so it isn’t like he’s gotten to keep every cent that he’s ever made in the sport.

And it’s a very short window of big earnings left, really. And while our egos may say that a true competitor bets on himself, as a family man there is something to be said about financial security.....

He can still have wins and championships wherever he goes, but if he suffers an injury that nags on him all season an incentive based contract would be a tough pill to swallow financially.

Yamaha does not have a new model for 2022. Slight changes and a new model in 2023. Ad far as the bike and Star. They have done so much in one season that changed the dynamic quickly. The bikes looked fantastic, the results were consistent and where you expect the riders they have to be at. If Tomac switches he will do well. He turns with the throttle and the Yamaha appreciates that. It is stable and handles well. It will gel with Eli really well.

Where did you hear that they won't have a new 450 for 22? Dry

Also so curious how you know it’s not a new bike?

They made major changes in 21 and refinements in 22. Normally they go on a 4 year R&D run. By now we would have heard of an all new bike with the Japanese nationals being very secretive testing it during racing. None of the above is happening. With sales doing well they can take the extra year and refine it further.

Just for fun, Keefer would know more than anyone. But i and guessing this is going to be a major frame/chassis change and those are the most difficult to change.

The 2020 Yamaha YZ450F was mostly all new. Some people say it was 2018 when they changed, but the 20 had a new frame and many engine changes. I would be surprised to see an all new bike in 22, but very few know at this point.

The 20 and 21 450 are the same with different colored number plates. The 250 was a major change from 20 to 21.

You are correct! I edited my post. I guess I was thinking about KTM coming out with their package that I believe is blue tooth.

I know the reason for the switch!
Kawi rolled out Eli's bike for the nationals, he saw that it still had the stupid oil cooler mounted to it's side and thought to himself: F..k that! I made a fool out of myself running this contraption for long enough.. time to say goodbye!

I’ve never understood why the additional oil cooler upsets so many people. Do you remove them from your automatic trans and power steering?

Eli will prove that the lack of success in the 450 class for the Yamaha was not the bike but rider(s)

He'll have extensively tested it for sure if the talk is 100%- he and his father are savvy pros with plenty of privacy in the mountains.

No one knows what they do.

Would Yamaha offer Tomac great 2022 season in states and option to MXGP adventure before some kind of career in industry?

Everyone knows Kawasaki has no interest in sending their US riders to the MXoN anymore. Maybe Tomac is fed up with not being able to race the event and Yamaha will send him!?!?

Guys?

This is pure speculation, but Tomac strikes me as a guy that wouldn't even leave the state of Colorado if his job didn't require him to (I don't blame him) so I would say the odds of a MXGP run would be nearly zero.

I would have loved to see 2018 Tomac give the GP's a run though.

doesn't kawi kinda tend to do this with all their top guys a year or 5 too early....this would not shock me one bit. although i'd be curious to know if he'll train down in FL, or stay in CO....I'd guess tomac would have something written in his contract saying he stays/trains in CO, and Yamaha sends people to test with him at his place.
