Looking at the Racer X Vault I saw that Tomac finished with 498 points in 2016 vs 470 this season. I know he had more wins and more problems this season, but thought it was interesting nonetheless.

So was Tomac truly as improved this year as everyone seems to say?

Correction below:
The last time someone won the title with 470 points or less was 1993 when there were only 8 races. ie:There has never been a year when 470 points would get you first overall, many years it wouldn't have even gotten you second. But Tomac was the best rider over 12 races and at the end that's all that matters.

2007 Grant Langston won with 439 so I'm not sure what Randy up there is saying and in 2009 Chad Reed won with 481

You're right. In the vault 125/lites/250f is first and big bikes are second. Except 2007(there may be more, I didn't check). I took RVs 544 points in lites as 450. So Langston holds the record, I was wrong. Albertyn had 477 and Reed 481 for 3rd and 4th lowest totals to win the title. But in Langstons defense, RC raced the first 5, won most of them and then retired so there is a possible 30 missing points.

Last year he didn't win the title. My guess is if he needed more this year he would have got more.
