Tomac Clutch Problem?

Edited Date/Time 10/6/2020 4:02pm
Did I miss what happened? Haven’t heard a thing. Ran a 2:11 , 2:16 messing with the clutch lever, then a 2:11 again??

Obviously. But if the clutch was failing, he wouldn’t have jumped back up to 2:11 lap times. Clutches don’t go bad for 1 lap

He said something went wrong with his clutch and then got back to normal.

Question, if indeed it is a clutch issue,

Is a full "Hinson" clutch similarly reliable in all the different makes, or do their inherent engine designs create reliability? issues?

yes, probably it is just be down to ET3 being hard on clutches compared to AC9.

I saw him messing with the clutch lever. WTF was he doing, there's no adjuster.

I think he was just waiting on AC, but once he saw AC still couldn’t pass him he just said Eff it, see ya.

Interesting. Wouldn't surprise me. Tomac is that type of dude.

All I'll say is Tomac has always been hard on clutches but I don't remember him having any DNF's prior to the juice clutch. May be time to throw it away and put a cable back on it and go get some of those heavy duty Pro Circuit clutch springs as he may not realize how much he's riding the clutch with such an easy pull.

Also it would allow for him to adjust it if needed as the moto went on.

Really don’t understand how Kawi can’t get him a better setup with a clutch. I really don’t remember him frying clutches on his Honda. Unless his riding style has changed that much since he’s on green.

I really think with the amount of times ET was looking back and the "unique" hand movements trying to fix a clutch that is basically unfixable up top (reservoir/lever/perch) that he was trying to help out the team. 100%. I swear dude was doing a wind-out motion at one point as if it was a cable clutch. I commend him on his effort.

They managed to put the oil cooler back on this bike. I remember some media outlet awhile back was talking about the black box on the left side of the cylinder being an oil cooler. I noticed its back on the bike. Increased oil capacity and cooling is obviously needed for him so he can fry his bike. Im sure having a easier clutch pull attracts his finger to work it. AC doesnt have the cooler either

He was definitely messing with the lever. It did look for a second like he was spinning a quick adjust cable clutch, but I think he was tapping the lever a bunch. Maybe it lost its bleed a bit and then pumped back up or had a rock or some dirt keeping it from moving all the way.

Yes they do if a rock gets caught. He had just passed Enticknapp.

AC does have the oil cooler, you can see it quite clearly in this picture taken at Red Bud (black thing on the side of the engine).

Welp I didnt see it, I stand corrected. Either way, but maybe im wrong again but it seems Kawi is the only bike running an oil cooler. Bike appears to need more oil but im a shitty c class rider so it would never be a problem for me lol

Bunching technique. (Just kidding). I really think he wanted to play a little cat and mouse with ac to re establish dominance under the green awning. I think we can all agree that Tomac would rather see anyone but ac win the title.

It looked like he was slapping the lever from the top to adjust it down. Then I was thinkin pumping it to get px back. But in the interview he said it "fixed itself".

I'm actually in agreement with the teammate theory. Once he saw Osborne was right on AC he said forget it.

The amount of times he looked back sure made it look like he was waiting.

It sure looked like he was considering helping AC get a few points, then decided it wasn’t going to happen and left.

I'm going with the theory Eli was faking a fading clutch to let his teammate catch up. The theatrical mid-air clutch lever flinging business makes more sense now.
