Tips for training when you aren't able to ride?

I race harescrambles about every weekend, but I just started college this fall and don't have anywhere to keep my bike so it stays at home and I never have time to drive there and then to a riding area so pretty much the only time I get a leg over the bike is on race day. I workout and go on long bicycle rides as much as time allows during the week but does anyone have any tips besides the usual cardio/working out to stay in riding shape without riding?

It's tough to replicate on the bike time but if you could only do one thing I'd recommend a rower.

Find some place (your college workout center?) with a Concept2 rower, and start rowing. You can approach it like running; mix up doing long distances (10k+), shorter distances (5k), and throw in interval training too.

Get to the point where you can row a sub-19 minute 5K and a sub-40 minute 10k, and a hare scramble will seem easy. Well, not easy, but easier.

Congrats. Focus on school, but to aid in training a rower and XC mtn biking are great.

either that, or chest day, every day. haha.

Core workouts, rower, bicycle. Some combo of those 5 days a week and also incorporate in some stretching in the morning will help immensely. Being more limber helps with injuries/soreness and you'll see a difference when you have to get technical with the bike.

Mount some handlebars on a strong belt and make all of those hot girls you are gonna score with wear it while you "ride" from behind. I guarantee that you will have a good work out and a lot of fun!

Things like crossfit, running, tennis, bmx jumping, dual-purpose bike, swimming, a bit of weightlifting, do it all!

Running will be good for a lot. Go fast, go far. Other than that, a 35 lb kettle bell can be found for under $60 for a quality piece at a retailer--much less for a used or cheap one. With some creativity and dedication, you can train a lot of muscles with one kettlebell

When i dont ride i do cardio, front squats, and deadlifts. Better than nothing but not the same as riding yourself into shape

In addition to rowing and cycling, any type of functional movement circuit will help build fitness. Go to your student workout center. Get a barbell load it with a light weight. Work on Front Squats, Rows, Presses, and Deadlifts. I set a timer for 10 minutes then complete each exercise mentioned above for 5 reps each cycling through as many rounds as possible.

If you're ever in a pinch with no equipment one of my favorites is to do burpees. Burpees will humble the fittest of athletes.

Good Luck. Be thankful you get to go race on the weekends. A lot of guys don't even have that luxury!

Agree, Concept 2 or Assault Bike. Complete body workout for endurance or sprinting and most important, low impact on the body. Maybe throw some Kettlebells in and you're golden. Now if you have no money, swimming or running...

Get a motovan and keep your bike with you during the week. If you get too drunk in a party you can sleep in the back of the van. I think it's a win-win ;-). Knowing what I know now that's what I would have done 20 years ago. Look like you already have a car. You can trade it for a motovan.

If it's not an option mountain biking is a good if you live in a hilly place. Otherwise it's not as effective as a crossfit training (pretty easy to coast on a mountain bike or road bike). Not all crossfit place are created equal!!! Some are all about weight number and other are really pushing your limits. Important things is your training should be always base on interval training. It's the proven way to improve your stamina.
