Totally understandable. Dude was solid, always top 5 it seems despite bike, year and competition and he saved team USA in the mxDn a couple of times?

What happened between him and Matthes?

Pretty sure the only thing between Tim and Matthes is Matthes man-crush for him. Pretty damn close to a 20 year career! Amazing when you think about it. He never pulled any supercross only stuff either. If anything, he seems like the type of guy he would have been motocross only. Enjoy retirement Red Dog

Truly a sad day in American MX history.

Matthes' latest podcast with Tim (part 1 of 2).

I used to race on the same track with him at Lockhart stadium in Ft. Luderdale Florida back in 1987/88. They would do a split start with the 80cc A/B class. I was in the B class and with the A class headstart could usually manage to not get lapped by all of the A riders except for Ferry. He would get me every time.

Hopefully he plays it a la Dowd or Henry, and come get a top 5 here and there in the next 10 years.

I stood in line all day to get his autograph once and I got all the way up there and found out the line was for James Stewart.

I raced there every weekend too in my 125 days. Old pete Scalzo. Practiced on Copans road weekly too. Tim and grandparents would take up the whole pits with thier rig. He raced a kx 80 three wheeler conversion out there too. I was lone Kawi, 13 years old in last ten seconds of this video. I talked to the person who posted it and said he had lots of old races there on film and was going to send me some but never heard from him again. We must have been there racing together DownSouth.

I was lucky enough to know Timmy and his family when I lived in Florida from 95-02. Good people for sure. They used to get me pit passes into Daytona every year back when there were no pit passes for Daytona. It was like a priveledge to be able to walk the pits back then. There would be nobody in there and you could just walk up to any racer and talk to them.

Good times.

I can remember when he was the only guy on a 4-stroke in Supercross, and there was a race in the Astrodome ( year 2000 ?) where they had that overpass thing setup. There was a 90 degree turn that went under that overpass and Tim was railing that turn faster than McGrath, Cobra or anyone else, it was that obvious. It was a treat to watch just how fast he got in & out of that one,, I wonder if there is any vid of that on Youtube......

I probably have that same race on VHS somewhere. Comcast used to broadcast the races from Lockhart on the public cable acces channel sometimesack then.

My dad and I used to go down to Copans road to ride back then also. Good times.

I wonder what Pete Scalzo is up to these days? Something was always odd about the tracks he used to run. He would get them open and they would run for a while before closing down supposedly owing the landowner money. He would always manage to reappear later with another new track opened up somewhere and the cycle would repeat itself.

Last I heard, Pete was running some little drag strip in NW Miami....way out in the sticks

He put in a MX track for a little bit, but it was really small, small jumps and no one went

Pete's traveling circus' is something I have been familiar with FOREVER....Miami Baseball Stadium, Miami Hollywood Speedway, WPB Baseball, Lockhart, and on and on and on...

Great job in acknowledging those who helped him throughout his career!

Every rider who earns a permanent number should issue a press release when he decides to retire from the sport.

I am just a WPB local who has enjoyed watching the local boy hit the big time in MX. My name is Shane. I am the same age as Timmy and a redhead to boot. I used to go practice on the shellrock tracks by the Elks lodge on Belvedere road in WPB on thurdays when Ferry and the rest of the crew from the old West Palm Honda shop would be there and guys would ask if I was his brother. Timmy and his family are good people, his dad hauled my bike to Gatorback a few times. I was in Gainesville going to UF and my dad could not make it up so big Tim brought my bike up so I could stay in the points chase in the 250C class during the winter series.

Scalzo was definatley a character, I used to watch his races at the WPB baseball stadium and raced his events at Lockhart and the South Florida fairgrounds. Once he had a race organzied down in Hollywood on a brand new track. It started raining on our way to the race and when we arrived we found a piece of land that had just been cleared and looked like no motorcycle had ever laid a wheel on it. They had knocked down maleluca trees and piled them up with dirt on top for the jumps. The rain had washed almost all of dirt off the jumps and there were just piles of trees left for obstacles and the rest of the track was a giant water/mudhole. Needless to say the race never happened and there were quite a few pissed off racers that day.
