I came across this quote looking at the August 2019 Racer X magazine.

"I just think that the reason why I can still be here and still be competitive is because I love it and whatever, but beside that, there's no greatness out there, in my opinion. There's no Ricky, James, Jeremy, RV, Dunge, these kinds of guys. People are going to love and hate that answer, but I just don't see greatness. I really don't. I think that's why I want to come back.

I guess competitive is one podium and a 5th in 11 rounds.

I think Chad has the results to give his opinion, but I feel it's a bit off base. Yeah, there isn't an RC out there, may never be another person to come in and dominate the sport. That's okay, but I think to say there is no greatness is a bit harsh.

Poll

Do you think the guys today get too much credit, or not enough?

Not enough. Chad, like many, is looking at the past with rose colored glasses.

The older he gets, the faster he was.

Reed has always been a great racer, but he's always come off as a bit of a douche in the personality area, at least to me. I'm sure he's a great guy in person to his friends, but publicly he seems to be desperate for attention.

i feel like reed just says controversial shit to stay relevant.

We might not have the one or two guys dominating winning everything by 30+ seconds right now but that doesn’t mean there’s ‘no greatness out there’.
Right now we have 7-8 guys who can run the pace and win on any given Saturday and it’s way more stacked than the Reed/RC/JS7 days imo..
These past 3-4 years have been great years to be a moto fan honestly, I like that there’s not a guy out there just destroying everybody

I agree with reed. He is 37 and keeping up with the top 10 still. He also believes he is better then those guys which I think is very important to have as a racer. Once he looses that, he’ll quit.

It was worse when he was winning. Blush

Reed is an ego maniac. I think he forgets that all his premier championships were won when the favourite was hurt.

Reed doesn't give a flying shit about what some slow ass squid yaps about on vital...who's greatest mx achievement is NOT stepping into a pile of dog shit on the way to the starting gate.

Same could be said about many guys who have won championships recently. Doesn’t mean a thing. The guy with the most points wins.

I think Reed is comparing the level of dominance that was displayed with guys like JM, RC, JS, RV, RD to what we have now. No one has really taken the reigns and established themself as "the guy." Roczen and Tomac have shown glimpses of it, but unfortunately have had significant injuries and have been inconsistent which has prevented it.

I disagree with Chad though. There is greatness out there currently. The talent pool is higher and it is difficult for one person to just dominate like the ones he mentioned.

As far as all time greats, Reed isn't even top five. I'd put RC, RV, Hannah, Dungey, and Johnson ahead of him.Stewart, too.

I agree completely, but I don't see those guys saying everyone out there sucks and that they're so much better. That's my whole point. Reed struggling to get top 10 against these "weak" riders isnt helping his point either.

The bikes are better with more horsepower, electronics technology, better suspension and easier to ride without making massive time costing mistakes than at any time in the past. This leads to more parity across the field. In supercross, the bikes have completely outgrown the tracks and stadiums. Reed is welcome to show us his "competitive greatness" outdoors, 5 years ago on the Kawi he was lucky to crack the top 10.

I doubt Webb, Tomac, Anderson care much about an old ~10th place supercross riders opinion either. Not hating on Reed. Just sayin...

Not sure if this is supposed to be a knock on him but that’s not a very good insult.

Reed is more accomplished than all of them to this point regardless of if they care or not.

Since Hannah was hurt and retired, every Championship was won when the favourite was hurt!

How many titles did he get RC for? You're an idiot if you think Reed had RC's number because it didn't happen.

Still has more wins than RV and Dung in SX. 4th all time. Not too bad if you ask me. He was the only one to keep RC honest. RC just rarely had a bad night. RCs bad night was 3rd. Now days guys bad nights are 8th or worse and more frequent. He was there and witnessed the speed through 4 generations of riders. Came out after 3 years of no outdoors at 36 years old and still got a top 5 in Moto 1. I would say he was/is pretty damn fast.

Same guys were in the field and Dungey still rose to the occasion.

Are we talking SX or MX here? Tomac and Roczen both have 2 450 MX titles, and are both in the top 10 all time wins in the class. Tomac is also in the top 10 all time SX wins

I think his biggest point is he’s old and washed up yet still competitive. He knows he peaked ten years ago but yet he can still battle with those guys.

Tomac is fast, but will be remembered as an enigmatic headcase.

Yeah, it's pretty refreshing to hear a rider speak his mind, even if we disagree. Webb's "He cracked..", the Justin Cooper VS Cianciarulo "cutting the track" incident, Jeffrey Herlings trolling US fans, Reed talking smack like he always has....yeah, they'll get hate here, but I'll take a rider's honest opinion over faux humility and rolling over any day.
