Have a thought or prayer if you are a believer for young French GP mx2 rider Axel Alletru who went down at the start of the first moto in Latvia. He's been transported to hospital with a broken L1 vertebrea and with apparently no feelings in his legs. Heinz Kinigardner one of the main guys behind the foundation Wings for Life that do a lot of research on spine injury was there and straight away took things in charge to get the best support for him. Lets all hope for the best and not to have another rider in a chair

Don't know if he was wearing a Leatt or back protector.

So sorry to hear this news.
PS- I am not a doctor, but it is unlikely a brace would help in an L1 injury...it is closer to the belt.

I hate these threads. Hoping for the best. That track did look crazy fast too.

Monni had a nasty one in Portugal too, was on the critical list for a while there. Any updates on his condition would be appreciated too. Tough sport.

X2 on hating these threads...

Call me a pussy but I can say that this type of thread makes me rethink getting back on the bike.

Well, back on a moto track anyway.

Crap. They should invent a complete leatt for the whole body. Prolly won't work, but these accidents must be deleted at some point. If we can send people to the moon, we should be able to build something?

My thoughts are with him and his GF? and family.

Unlikely. Probably a fusion across that vertabrae for support.

Bad news at any rate....thoughts and prayers for the young man....

Latest news, fortunately, the vertebrectomy wasn't necessary. He got plates and screws to maintain the vertebrae. He got feeling in one leg and pins and needles in the other.

And yes vertebrectomy = removal of one or multiple vertebrae. It happens when you got tumors, metastases or a really damaged vertebra.

Not good !!!

I fractured my L1, L2, L3 and L4 two years ago and had surgery called kyphoplasty on them.
It hurts everyday but i can still ride and I'm sure that Axel can recover from this.

Reported on Belgium forum that Martens told he has feeling in both legs.

Nothing more at the moment, but very good news none the less.
There was a Belgian doctor there who has experience with motocross, he, together with Kinigardner(frontman of Wings for Life) got him some good help from the get go, they even flew in special meds from Belgium, since Latvian medical aid can be a bit sketchy. J.Martens said on his site, they helped a lot to get him the attention he needed,so no mistakes were made.
