Good read always wondered how these open class bikes stacked up. Crazy how low the prices were back then.

The 85 ktm 500 i raced was a blast, hit so hard at very low rpm.

The 88 had been detuned a bunch.

I was racing my 87 430cr in 88 ,the cagiva 500 was a big pig of a bike but had a good engine.

Lots of drum brakes in the rear.
That Honda looks great, as they did 1988-1996.

The double leading shoe on the front of my 84 yz490 worked better than some of those front disc did .

The atk chain torque eliminator was not good for mx use . You couldn't load the suspension to seatbounce or prejump.

I rode dag's link bike a few laps at devils ridge and it was the same way. No like.

Nice write up on the big bores from yesteryear. The Dogger put his to good use in that years MXDN.

Ok. Valid point there.. I have no experience of drum brakes myself, so no opinion here.

The KX500 was slightly more desirable so I went to a Kawi dealer with my car and trailer to pick one up. After seeing the color of the bike in person there was no way (serious as a heart attack here) I was going to tow that behind my Mercedes that I had all AMG'd out (lowered suspension, body kit, Recaros, 16 inch wheels, Euro headlights and bumpers, etc) so I drove directly to Honda of Lomita and bought a 88 CR500 Honda.

Later CHP was kind enough to certify that my car trailer combo operated at 89 MPH without any issues....glad they hadn't clocked me earlier as I was triple digits. :-)
