hey tblazier I just wanted to thank you for these - far and away my favorite threads / links.
The 91 YZ125 (a bike I am well familiar with) article was great. If only someone could dig up that pre-production test where it was a screamer...and then the stock bike was down 2 hp...yikes.

Thanks for the kind words. I still have the pre-pro article and I read it again when writing this. DIRT BIKE totally love them and raved about how fast they were I have no idea what happened between that and production.

Ok. I really like your pieces. But let's get something straight. I raced both the 79 and 80. The 79 motor was better than the 80. Broader range, bigger hit. The 80 was better suspended and handled better (a little). Not sure where you got your motor info.

I have every Mag test and shootout article from both years and used them for my research. The opinion is not mine, it was the one of MXA, Dirt Bike and Cycle World at the time. Since I have never ridden those two bikes, I rely on the tests done at the time for accurate info. According to every test done in 1980, the '80 motor was far superior and much more powerful than the hard-to-ride '79. Maybe yours ran differently

Great write up. I remember those bikes well. I was about to buy one to replace my stanky 82 YZ but took a break from racing instead.

Note: Foxborough was a SX and had no effect of Ronnie Lechiens 125 Championship quest.
