Having been born in 1977, it's a little before my time but I must say... the bikes of that era are true works of art. Even more when you saw the factory machines and the amount of hand crafted work that went into them.

Nice write up! I enjoy these each and every time.

I rode one in 74,the pipe was a U shape the exhausted straight down in front of the engine.. it was slow.

Cagiva were made in the same factory in the 80,s. Used the big number one out front just painted it italy colors.

I've seen several of those in H-D dealers collections across the country.

That was truly the golden era of motocross IMO. I can still remember a MXA article from back then featuring all of the current works bikes. There were like three pages of bikes. The "Big-4" obviously, but in addition you had HD, OSSA, Maico, CZ, Husky, Penton, Can-Am, Bultaco, Ammex. I'm sure I'm leaving some out, but you get the picture. Over a dozen different manufacturers on the gate, thats almost unfathomable now.

Cool read!

I saw one in person a year or two ago at Steel City National at the Legends and Heroes truck. The guy there was really nice and informative. I think I remember him saying the cast iron cylinders on those things weighed close to 80 pounds! The whole engine in a new bike today probably is close to that!?!

Great read Tony, well done!
Hazzard, I believe your talking about me. Thanks for the kind words!
This one is on display at Laugermans HD right down the street from the Harley plant in York PA.

This one is mine. Had it in a Harley show earlier this year. Most of the v-twin guys had never seen 1 or heard of 1. They must have thought it was unique as it won best in show.

Nicely done, as usual.
One thing...Rich Eierstedt.

From Jody's eulogy to Rich., "I always used to kid Rich about his Norwegian last name and given that my German last name is equally hard to pronounce...he would always take great pleasure in saying that his name was just like the kid’s song “Old MacDonald’s Farm.” Then, he would sing, “Ee-i-ee-i-oh!"
