Thinking about a change... 300 2stroke to CRF250RX, but have some doubts

Hi all!!!

I was to post it in the off-road forum but it has to little activity, so sorry if it is pure moto...

I have ALLWAYS ridden 2 strokes, and for the last 3 years, it has been a 2015 GasGas 300 (before it was an ktm 250 EXC, similar to the xc-w in the states) which I am actually pretty happy with... I mostly ride enduro with an ocasional visit to the mx track

As you can expect, the 300 2stroke is a low end monster, perfect for slow step rocky trail riding, and more than enough powerfull for when the trail opens. With that said, I am thinking about a change and try something new, and I am really inclined to the CRF250RX 2018 that I can at a good price as a previous model year.

Now I am not concerned about the top end horsepower as it is close to what the GasGas is, and it is more than enough for the terrain I ride. I have not the possibility to test ride this bike before buying it as there are few hondas in the trails around here (90% are ktm with some betas, and that's it). What I am concerned is about the low end torque... Will it be a masive difference to the gas gas while climbing step slow trails? I am a decent rider in the trail (and just average at the track),so not concerned about not being able to climb, just getting bored of abusing the clutch and maybe stall the engine more often?

As the suite of the bike depends A LOT to the terrain it is ridden in, I send you some clips of the kind of riding I mean when I talk about being concerned about the character of the bike... It is not all I ride obviously but quite often I ride this type of terrain.... So hopefully someno has ridden the bike in something similar and can help

I forgot, I am not any of the guys riding in the video, just my area and the type of enduro I do.... My pace is faster than that

Honda didn't make a 2018 CRF250RX. 2019 is the first year.

Sorry 2018 better explain myself better.... last year Red Moto, and Italian honda importer, made an CRF250 enduro, similar to what the RX become... It is essentially the same

I have no knowledge of the Honda at all. But, in my experience, based on your video...a 2 stroke will be a better choice for that type of riding. Just my .02.

You are probably right... just looking for a change and wanting to hear some first hand experience with the honda....

I want to change the bike but do not want to buy a ktm because of crappy x-plor forks the enduro version cames with... A new gas gas would be ideal as it comes now with KYB SSS, but seems like they are having economical problems and it is becoming a nightmare to get some spares.... I have tested the beta and do not like the suspension either (sachs).....

So I am exploring my options

Sounds like a dilemma. You sound pretty knowledgeable so you know it's easier to get suspension to work than the motor.

What about a yz250x with an Athena 300 kit on it?

|

4/13/2019 11:47 AM

Making the xplor work is $$ and wont be a KYB.... And the YZ250X.... thats a good idea, we but we only got them here in 2017, so I would have to buy second hand wich actually is not a problem...

Probably I'll end up with a new gasgas and hoping the brand does not goes to shit in the near future

I had a Gas Gas 300 2 smoker and I know it is not the same but a YZ250F and I don`t think the 250F held a candle to the 300 IMHO. The 250F revved out to fast for me and the 300 lugged really well for a 2 stroke (Thats why Gas Gas calls them a 3 stroke), not to mention the 300 had a much broader powerband.

I might keep the 300 until I can test the Honda an then decide... I afraid that no bike will lug like the 300. I don't expect the Honda to do it anyways

Wouldn’t it make more sense to compare a 300 2t to a 450 not a 250?? Obviously the 300 is going to blow the doors off a 250.. sounds like a 2 stroke junkie that just wants to rip on 4 strokes. Grow a pair and go ride a new 450 4 stroke.

300xc is the perfect bike for that kind of riding... crf250x wouldn't even be on my top 5 list for that kind of stuff. Maybe my top ten....

A 450 4t would be a pain in the ass for that technical stuff. Not saying it can't be done...I humped an XR600 around in that kinda stuff but why not get the bike most suited for what you're riding?

I’ve been on an 18’ Husky TE-300 for the last year and a half, and KTM 250 XC’s prior to that. I just recently rode a 19 KTM 250 XC-F at a KTM/Husky demo day and was very disappointed with the power, especially the low to mid. You had to rev the hell out of it to go anywhere. I would assume the Honda would be even worse since it’s not really a dedicated XC bike like the KTM/Husky 250F. I went to the demo thinking the 250 XC-F was going to be my next bike. All I can say is, I’m darn glad I rode one first. I would’ve been very disappointed. For the type of trails in your video, the 250/300 2-stroke is the way to go, no doubt.

You are absolutely right about 2 stroke junkie wanting to rip a 4stroke.... but as plowboy said, a 450 would absolutely be a pain in the ass.... I might end with a new 300 probably. I know is the best engine for it... I might have to kick out the idea of the Honda from my head

Ktm makes dirtbikes. Honda makes cars and ATVs

Picked one up 2 weeks ago haven't ridden much woods yet but the bike is really good map 1 is super smooth with decent low end, and map 3 revs super high but with not as much low end. Suspension seems really good. Didn't want to deal with ktm and the aer forks. Plus honda quality is amazing

One thing about the CRF250RX is it has a 5 speed close ratio gearbox - YZ250FX has a six speed - If that is important.

The YZ250FX is very good in its class. (KYB SSS)

The GasGas 300 has a great motor.

Mountain extreme enduro's are won by 300 cc 2T or 250 4T - Mostly 300 2T but the 250f is surprising competitive in the same terrain.

You need to import a 300XC or a TX300

Kyb forks on a husky or ktm and live happily ever after

|

4/14/2019 8:50 AM

I'd go with the 300. That bike does everything well !

This. Or get the yz250x if you want a change. But in all honesty anything other than a husky/ktm/sherco/beta 300 would be a huge step down from the gasgas for this type of riding.

|

4/14/2019 10:43 AM

I'll go with a new gasgas, and hope the brand does not goes bankruptcy as it went in 2015 so spares do not dry...

Last week they announced they were firing 25% of the staff... It is supposed to be most of them from their electrical side of the business.... But who knows

|

4/15/2019 8:05 AM

It sounds like the perfect bike for you would be a Husky or KTM 350.

|

4/15/2019 8:50 AM

did you not watch his vid?! a 350 would be spewing coolant in ONE minute in that stuff. No thanks.

A forum member here let me ride his TX300 last week at our buddy's track. That is an excellent bike. The engine was very good. The suspension was a little soft and bouncy for motocross, but very good for off-road.

250F gonna feel hella slow compared to a 300 smoker.... But, will be less tiring and generally more boring to ride...
