The rise and fall of the seat hump in MX?

Edited Date/Time 5/13/2021 4:54pm
Slow week in Moto, So Can someone explain who was the first racer that started the trend of putting a hump in their riding seat? Also why did it take off with almost everyone having one then all the sudden it was gone? I never had one and thought it would have been a issue when trying to move around on the bike? The most outrageous one you ever seen a racer use?

Nate Ramsey the first?

As to why it isn't seen as much anymore, maybe due to better seat material/construction and/or power delivery via mapping gives the rider what they want to stay in the cockpit better.

Don't know the answer to any questions, but have to say thread title is great -- works on levels.

Can't really answer any of your questions but van Horebeek in the GPs always had a pretty ridiculous seat bump

Just found this pic. Pretty sure he had an even higher bump on other bikes

That's not a seat hump, that's a taint-tickler bro!

Gripper seats seem to work fine
This, I think gripper seats have come a long way from when the seat bump was first implemented. I think modern 4-strokes are a lot less "violent" than the early 2000s as well, negating the need for the bump with a proper gripper seat.

That's technically still a seat hump.

Exactly. It's just a different kind of hump.

They still appear every now and again. I think the raised strips took over as the preferred method to keeping planted in the saddle since you were stuck with one fixed position of a big bump.

I actually just put one on my seat, along with a ribbed cover. We’ll see if it remains, but I remember liking them on 450’s back in the day to keep your ass in place off the start and under hard acceleration out of corners if it catches you off guard.

The rise: someone had one, so everybody else tried it.

The fall: everyone realized they suck and ditched them. Cool

Looks like they used a roll of toilet paper stolen from the Port-A-Can!

One of thr ugliest things to make it onto a dirt bike.

Sometimes I've seen them on 125s... lol

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Malcolm was the only rider I noticed in SX running a seat hump..

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Man, I was part of that fad too though. I went further with the SDG Step Seat. So goofy looking.

Although I will admit I found one really useful purpose. When I was teaching my daughter to ride on a 50, I improvised a little seat bump with some vinyl and a piece of foam, just to teach her the right place to sit and keep her from sliding back all the time.

I did the same for my son. Think it was an old bar pad I slid under the cover, nothing large just something he would feel if he wasn't where he should be sitting down. Took a few rides then he didn't need it anymore.

I see some riders doing more of a dip than a hump, ya know?

Without any quantitative proof, I seem to recall a bunch of sx pros going that route lately.

PS - is that the SDG step seat?

Being that I'm short af, that seat bump would be no more than a speed bag for my schnuts.
