Honda has never won a 450 championship after dominating the sport for years on 250 2 strokes is an interesting stat.

20 different riders have won the premier class title in the 44 year history of the sport.

Jimmy Weinert was the first and only rider to use (and win) a SX race with a paddle tire (Oakland 1978)... The AMA banned use of paddle tires afterwards.

Steve Stackable of Texas won the last 500cc series on a Maico..There will never be another one, they were banned by the AMA after that. He finished ahead of Tony Distefano on the Suzuki and Jim Weinert on the Kawasaki.

He and Reed nearly did at San Diego in 05. Larocco, in 3rd, crossed the line just a few bike lengths in front of them. Insane that 1st and 2nd nearly lapped everyone else. Carmichael actually crashed in the last section trying to repass Reed, but it’s still crazy that Reed was right there and Carmichael would have been too.

I think the winner of the 3rd race of the year has a high percentage of winning the entire series.

In 44 years, 21 of the titles have been won by someone with the first name Ryan, Jeff, or Richard.

The class wasnt banned. You made that part up in your head. They dropped it at the pro level because the gates werent filling up anymore.

AMA still organizes open class motocross, like they always have, and always will.

Try reading what you just wrote. "They dropped it".

This will be the first year since 2009 that Ryan didn't win the 450 SX title

It happened every year from 2007-2011. But from 2012-2018 (assuming Tomac doesn't win the championship this year), it will only be done 3 times in 7 years.

I doubt it's a meaningful stat. The series championship usually wins about half the races. So about half the time the champ should win the third race.

I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that Kevin Windham finished 2nd in the premier class more times than anyone else.

By the end of this year, James Tomac will likely be the rider with the most wins with no title, passing Bradshaw and Windham.

With Reed breaking the all time start record last weekend, and DNFing, it made me wonder who has the most main event finishes. Any ideas?

That would be tough to verify, because AMA doesn't seem to have reliable designations of DNF.

For instance, Reed is not listed as a DNF last week: https://archives.amasupercross.com/xml/SX/events/S1840/S1F1RES.pdf
