The 250 class is unfair to big guys

Year after year we watch as the smaller jockeys get the holeshot.

This year it's Plessinger, prior years Malcolm and many others.

MXA interview:
"Have you ridden a 450 much since joining Star Yamaha? I ask, because it seems like a bigger bike may suit you. I love the 450. I rode one every Thursday before every outdoor in 2015. I feel that riding a 450 during the week makes me a little bit better rider. I can handle the 450 better. I rode a 450 a lot in my amateur career and always did well on one. I like it, as it’s a little bit bigger and a lot faster. I can actually throw one around pretty well. I like the 450 power!"

My first boss always told me "don't come to me with a problem unless you have a solution". OP, go.

The answer is obvious. The top guys in each class run almost the same speed, and as shown by the graphic yesterday all of the top guys are successful in their 1st year in the bigger bike class. There is no need other than marketing for 2 classes, and we are being sold a bill of goods.

1 class for pros, run anything you want, elimination format starting with 80 riders.

If this was the case then Jeremy Martin should be holeshotting and winning every race, meanwhile he cant buy a start or finish.

Starts are a bit of an enigma to some riders. I'm not sure I buy the size thing. Hill is a tiny guy, and he was getting TERRIBLE starts at the start of this season and he's inconsistent at best on starts. McElrath looks a bit bigger, and he gets good starts regularly.

I'm a Plessinger fan and would love to see what he could do in the 450 class. But I think he will get similar starts on the 450.

Small guys are at a disadvantage on a 450.. if you could ride what class you wanted, it wouldn't be an issue, but you cant.

Holeshots have a lot more to do with technique and setup than horsepower

Meanwhile last summer, 6'1 AC pulled a lot of great starts... On a bike many say is under powered compared to a Yamaha or Ktm/husky... If you are a good starter, you are a good starter..

Malcolm Stewart won a championship on a 250f so I'm not sure it's size maybe more technique also I'm 6ft 210 and I seem to ride much better on a 250 but im also very slow compared to Malcolm Stewart

More weight equals less roost . Less roost equals more traction ...right ? Timing and technique and sometimes a little luck mixed in equals a good hole shot.

I wouldnt think a 52 hp 250 f would have trouble launching from the gate. its not 125 smokers anymore. He is facing at the most 7 bikes with as much hp as he has. 60% of the field is on a weaker bike that would level out his size. He needs to look within himself to get better starts.

I call bulllshit on that!!! You may be able to throw around a 250f because it's a bit lighter weight, but at 210 pounds your lap times would be much much slower no matter the bike set up when comparing to a 450 and you would have to work the throttle/clutch twice as hard.

I'm a clydesdale as well and I'll tell you now, I'm at a big disadvantage when I'm testing a 250 amongst 140 pound riders!! Anyone who thinks otherwise is full of shit! 250f barely moves me around the track and I would definitely not want to hit technical rhythm sections on any track with one. Those bikes feel to bogged down for me at my current weight

40 pounds is a big difference in motocross, I imagine if I strapped a 40lb bag of concrete to my body I wouldn't want to ride a 250f either but when you're Beating dudes that used to smoke you when you rode a 450 somethings going on......

Physical size is a factor in any sport. Basketball its tall dudes, football is big and strong, moto is as light weight as possible to get the most power from the bike. Its just the way it is. Look at rv and rc. Both tiny ass dudes but ripped all day long. Its an advantage yes but that doesnt stop taller guys from doing well too.

Dirt bikes are unfair to big guys.

Buuuuut, we still race them and know what we're getting into. Yep, the heavier you are, the more power you need and SX for anyone weighing over 160lbs is going to be tough on a 250 but you've gotta make it work. Plessinger is doing a solid job as did Malcolm Stewart last season and Travis Preston back in 2002 when he beat James straight up in the 125 West championship.

Starts are very dependent weight, but that's not the only factor. Plessinger definitely needs to work on his starts. He can do much better than he has been (and I would be surprised if a few 450 teams are not looking at him. I believe he will be a very solid 450 rider).

Have you heard of . Tractive Effort ? Smile

The tractive effort or force between a wheel and the surface can be expressed as

F = μt W

= μt m ag (1)

where

F = traction effort or force acting on the wheel from the surface (N, lbf)

μt = adhesion coefficient between the wheel and the surface

W = weight or vertical force between wheel and surface (N, lbf))

m = mass on the wheel (kg, slugs)

ag = acceleration of gravity (9.81 m/s2, 32.17405 ft/s2)
