GILPIN COUNTY, Colo. -- A dirt biker is recovering after striking a large cable which was strung across a trail in Gilpin County, a stunt that some believe was meant to deter bikers to the area.

On the blog Thumpertalk.com an emergency room doctor told a blogger that he treated someone "who was severely injured dirt-biking. (Injured) by a wire that was strung across the trail at neck height, up near Gamble Gulch in the Rollinsville area."

According to the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office, the wire was a 1.5-inch thick cable. The cable slashed the victim's throat.

The sheriff's office said Tobin Michael Kohlhepp then drove himself to a hospital in Boulder.

Residents said there is a constant fight between land owners who live in Gamble Gulch and dirt bikers who often improperly use private trails.

The Gilpin County Sheriff is investigating whether that cable was put there intentionally.

Seems like that happens somewhere every year out in Cali.

I hope that catch the POS and charge them with attempted murder.

1) If it was private property and properly posted as such with no trespassing signs, then the biker shouldn't have been there to get hurt.

2) Anyone stringing a cable across a path at neck height should be prosecuted for attempted murder or wreckless endangerment, etc... even if it is a land owner within a posted area. To close a road, a cable should be no more than 30" off the ground and should have ribbons hanging from it, etc.

3) We don't know the facts of the case from what's in this thread.

Good points, but Nederland is just outside of the Peoples Republic of Boulder Colorado.

That happens alot in the MTB world. Most of the MTB trails are also horse and hiker trails, and these things do happen.

That's a pretty common thing here in KY, but not the most dangerous. If your out getting your Cross-Country on in the mountains of Eastern KY, and you happen to come across a previously unseen trail that looks only slightly traveled on, you really shouldnt even ride it. The reason is that there are several trails the locals in Eastern KY have made that lead to crops of pot, and you better believe they booby trap those trails. I've heard everything from boards with nails driven into them dropping out of trees when a wire is tripped, to elaborate trip wires that are actually wired to shotguns anchored down in the trees....be careful out there.

Not necessarily.
A lot of dirt riders around here run into issues with hunters or Rambo type characters. There are some places around here where I will never ride by myself. One of my buddy had a gun pointed to his head. And another one ran into a guy who made all kind of noise about not riding on private property when he was clearly on national forest property. When my buddy asked him what his name was and where his property line started the guy mumbled something about "hey, I don't want to tell you. I don't know if you are FBI or something..." Just plain weird. The wild west is alive and well in Colorado...
