I'm thinking about taking my 4 year-old girl to Oakland SX but I am new to the area and have never been there. Any ideas for good sections to sit in or any other kid-friendly ideas? I couldn't find any family seating- I'm not that worried about it, but I know some of you NorCal boys and girls can be rowdy. Grinning
I have a hotel in Berkeley that I stay at, but a good one near the venue would be nice, if anybody knows somewhere nice nearby that won't be full of bros getting hammered (not that there's anything wrong with that).
She's been to Hangtown twice with no problem- her main concern is whether Oakland has a sand pit to play in like Hangtown. I told her no, and she's taking it pretty well. She watches moto with me all the time- it's pretty awesome to have a little moto pal! I think she is going to love it.

Having a daughter is the best. Taking her to supercross and her enjoying it is seriously second to none. I’m not from the area so can’t help much, but have fun.

The cheap seats high up are usually pretty mellow and a good view. Don’t worry it won’t be like a Traitor game.

It's cool inside, but oakland is really sketchy. I would just get an Uber straight to the venue and then again on the way home. All the mainstream hotels in the area are surrounded with security fences etc. And you have to get buzzed in.

When I was with my son, we got the bart commuter train to the Coliseum, but last year I took the mrs and younger daughter so uber.

Aaaand....Berkeley it is! Thanks, that's the sort of thing I was wondering about.

Emeryville or Jack London square...’is a option.
Even the Oakland Zoo and the kids Berkeley Lawrence Hall of Science Museum are great options to fit in.

Or like we’ve done.
Drive in from the valley and stay like in Dublin or Pleasanton and Bart in and back.

I always get club level seats. I have found that to have the most families/real moto fans. Ever since I made the switch I have not seen any drunks or rowdy fans around me and my family.

In my opinion, the extra ticket costs are worth it. Those seats are usually nicer, better bathrooms, and they also have a host to make sure only club level ticket holders are able to enter that level.

That's perfect- thanks. I think I'll do that, if they are not too pricey.
And NorCal Vet- I plan on going into the city on Sunday- maybe the Aquarium and Coit Tower. SF is an amazing city- I go there quite a bit, but I haven't set foot in Oakland yet.

I'm not an Uber dude, but do you know if traffic is usually really bad after this particular event? I find it depends on the surrounding roads. I'm planning on just driving back to the hotel, but might leave a bit early to avoid getting stuck for too long.

Grinning I'll check it out. It would feel a bit weird getting in a car with a stranger with my kid in Oakland, but maybe I am just old.

Dude, you actually know more about the uber driver than any cab or bus driver

I don't know about Uber, but we usually tow the kids onto the BART (train). If you take the train I would recommend carrying her across the pedestrian bridge as it is very busy after the race. A few interesting characters hawking merchandise outside of the stadium, but never had any problems. We usually park at the Ashby train station in Berkeley. Get on the Orange line south and you don't have to make any transfers. Way cheaper than parking at the stadium if there is only 2 people. Crowds at the race have not been a problem in the past. We always sit up high where you can see the whole track and where tickets are cheap. You can find some places in the stadium that are not too crowded up there too. We will be there. I will be the guy with 5 kids and the wifey in tow. Wink Have fun!

I took my 4 yr old daughter to the race last year and we rode BART in to the stadium. Wasn’t too bad, but leaving on BART is a total cluster and Oakland seems to bring out a lot of drunks for whatever reason compared to other SX I’ve been to so it made the train ride interesting. Uber is the best option IMO, you dont want to really be hanging around in Oakland if you don’t have too, it’s really kind of a shithole.

funny enough, only time i've seen a fight and someone get escorted out was the only time i've sat club-level, and in oakland.

it was not a huge deal—contained and handled quickly.

I can see the call to my wife now: "Hey honey, we're hopping on BART. Yes, I know it's late on a Saturday. Yes, we're fine...really, this was a good idea."

Unless she is very interested in the sport, might wanna leave her at home. 4 year olds will cause you to miss a lot of the race more often than not.

Oakland is about 1:15 min drive for me. I have been to the SX there 2-3 times.
Now, I just skip it. I'm not a fan at all of that town. My 3 cents.

S.F. was so much nicer. That place felt way more Family. Oakland feels way more survival.

I agree, I’ve been to Anaheim, PHX, and Dallas and the feel and vibe “of the crowd” is much different than Oakland. I lived about an Hour from Oakland too and chose to stay home some years because I didn’t want to deal with it. Hard to explain but it just brings a different group out. Upside is the racing is always great at Oakland so it’s a tough call

I'm a local born native & grew up in some rough neighborhoods like Oakland. So what some of you would consider rowdy would be normal for me. It's not to bad if you're in the upper level as mentioned. I'll be taking my family as well to the races. Send me a PM if you have any questions I can help you with. Personally wouldn't advise you staying in Oakland as well overnight. Have fun !

Oakland is a shithole. I HAVE to fly into that wonderland to see clients for work, no way I would choose to go if a paycheck wasn't involved. Like others have said, Uber to and from the stadium from wherever you are staying (which I'm certain will be outside of Oakland). On the BART you will find a who's who of mental illness. Avoid that with your baby girl unless she's ready for the life lesson talk that all actions have consequences.

I sit up in the higher seats (more fam friendly) when I take my oldest daughter (she's 8). My youngest daughter (5) stays home because she can't sit through a movie yet, much less a supercross without fidgeting.

Good luck, have fun, be safe.

the walk from BART to the stadium is an interesting life experience if you're into people watching (as is the bart ride from SF...)

higher seats on the backside are good and the concessions are clean.

While weather forecast is good now, consider being under the overhang in case it rains.
in 100 sections typically rows 30 and higher are under overhang.

Yes, tough area. I just pay the $40 parking and bitch about it. I have parked near BART station without issue before, but def sketchy area.

Lots of great info- thanks. We used to hang out in Baltimore (the nice parts) so we can probably handle it. Right now it looks like I'll be approaching it like a 'Nam rescue mission (get in and out, and avoid trouble).
I'm not getting on the BART with her after the race though!

Exactly why I wish they would go back to Santa Clara and get rid of the Oakland round. Being in a wheelchair I was super uneasy going to the Oakland race with my gf (now fiance) but the Santa Clara race was no problem. You could run into bad stuff pretty much anywhere but the whole night in Oakland had me feeling on edge with some of the crazy sh*t I was seeing.

Geez- what kind of crazy stuff? People doing meth in the seats?
I don't want to belabor the post, but some of you guys have me wondering if I should even do this. It's kind of sad that I have to seriously contemplate my girl's safety just to go see a sporting event in a modern American city. I want to have fun, not survive the night with PTSD. Grinning

Just drive in and it will be like every other supercross but just in an older stadium.

The problems were outside the stadium, not inside. You'd be fine if you just take an uber straight to and from the stadium. We last went about 5 years ago before Uber was much of a thing and we walked about half a mile. I won't get into all the details, I'll just say the times we went to the SX in Santa Clara were far more enjoyable but I have no interest going back to Oakland for a race.

To close the loop on this, I'd give my experience a 2.5 stars out of 5, but that's my fault.
Figuring it would be better to show up at the start of the show so she could make it through, I showed up at 6:20 and was directed to overflow parking across the highway. Not a huge deal- we walked over and found an entrance and went through security. (I had planned to park in lot A and mapped out the best entrance for my seat).
That is when I discovered that just showing up at a gigantic stadium at night for the first time, with a 4.5 year-old and thinking you will just make your way to your seat is a questionably sane idea (at least in my case). I spent the next 40 minutes carrying my kid around the perimeter and talking to 4-5 staff that kept sending me around in search of section 249. By the time I figured it out, I saw that section of the "club" was being remodeled, my section was pretty much sealed off, and a guy told me to go through the men's room. I was getting a bit bummed out at that point.
We watched some heat action and I needed a beer (and her a snack) by that point. (Holy Shit the line was the slowest moving I have ever been in, I think the guy at the register had popped a 'lude.)
After a heat or two, she was ready to go and we left. I made it back in time to watch the main in the hotel (Go Webb) and she conked out. But she was a super trooper and said afterwards that it was cool.
We had a spectacular day on Sunday at Pier 39 so the trip was awesome overall. I think she'll probably stay home next time. Grinning And I didn't encounter one jerk-off in the thousands of people we saw.
Even at night out in a dark stadium parking lot. People were cool as hell and friendly to a T. Thumbs up on that, Californians!
