Yep.... Huge difference from the Darts of my era for sure.
They weren't pretty, but to this day, they were one of the quickest production cars ever built. Ma Mopar shoved a 426 Hemi into them and they were capable of 10.30 in the 1/4 mile.
Darts were legit. See 1968 Dart Super Sport.

Hurst built those cars. The inner fenders were clearanced with a sledgehammer and the rear fenders were allegedly cut out with a sawzall. They were some of the baddest production vehicles ever to be released by an auto manufacturer, though. The new Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet Mustangs are faster out of the box, but it took 40 years to build something quicker. :D

Good luck finding an authentic hemi dart for under $200,000.

I know that Hurst built them. It's amazing all the things they did to lighten those things up. As far as value, in the early 2000's before the bubble burst, they were going for over $500k and some of the famous examples (Dick Landy, Sox & Martin) were going for $750k +.

They would run 10.30's in that SS/AA form maybe but off the showroom floor? Maybe off the top of a mountain they might do that. Off the showroom way back then they might spin their way down the 1/4 mile in around 15+ seconds. PUt some slick and maybe high 13's to low 14's.
In no way is a showroom engine even in the same ballpark as an engine setup to run NHRA Stock or Super stock classes as the car above. Nice car and I'm not being an ass. I spent a lot of time drag racing during my off mx years and just didn't want the unknowing to think that car bought new would do that.

Steve Atwell owns 2 of them, one of the pair is very close to as-delivered condition (not blueprinted for S/S) and runs solidly in the 11's on slicks. Even a regular Hemi car could run in the 13's...

I had a 74'...musta' had 500,000 miles on it before the body rotted away. You can't kill those slant 6 motors!
Exactly.....that Slant 6 was the best production engine ever made.
Of course since I was a teenager when I had mine the engine didn't survive the collision.....lol.
The Dart was a very popular car for the weekend drag racers, at least in this area.
We used to go watch friends run at the Connecticut Dragway in Colchester when I was a kid.
That track is now the location for the Consumer Reports testing grounds.

That's funny you mention Steve. I was going to jump in on that. I was with Steve Saturday night (highschool buddy). He is widely known as the authority on light weight hemi cars.
Among hemi enthusiasts Steve's collection (not just Darts) is held in very high regard. Many magazines have come to Steve for information on all things hemi.
The great thing about Steve is he is a genuinely nice guy. Most of the time he is also the smartest guy in the room if the topic is muscle cars.
Whoever used the term "gay" when talking about TP and rally cars.....doesn't know much about rally. The level of skill and testicular fortitude needed to drive a rally car competitively is something only a few drivers really have mastered.
Ok-THAT car has some traction issues! My brother had a 440 in his Demon (after he blew up a 340 AND a 383), the motor was bulletproof and had gobs of torque, he could never get it to hook up with that 440.
The Shop
...or a 340 six pack
and something even nicer.......

transmission?
By the way; that 1968 SS Hemi Dart is as cool as it gets...
