Does anyone remember when opening ceremonies were a spectacle of large quantities of fireworks and green lasers? I remember watching the lites heat races through a cloud of smoke. Im curious if anyone misses the hype they used to have and why they were tamed down. I'm wondering if it was due to fire codes. It also makes me sad that people no longer stand up during the main event. Of course, the video quality of rider introductions has gone up.

Yeah I’m right there with you. Seeing Tyler Evans in a mink fur coat with a Gucci seat in opening ceremony, KDub’s massive transfers, those were the days. I thought it was badass having the first race with a small could of smoke looming in the air, just the ambiance was cool

One guy in the dark with a spotlight doing a lap. Back in the 90s, over the triple, guys would do massive whips, and the crowd went crazy.

Of course it sounded bad ass with one bike echoing around the stadium, and the smell of two stroke in the air. It was a better time. Much better.

Kind of off topic but does anybody know what Anderson’s song was this weekend?

You can have both it just depends on if Jeff Alessi is in attendance or not.

Glad someone else stated this. In Atlanta this weekend I couldn't help but think of how weak opening ceremonies are now. They have seemed to get worse every year. Cloud smoke in the domes would be my only guess. #makeopeningceremoniesgreatagain

My thought exactly. The best part in ATL was Davi riding out with his son. my wife's comment was, "cool they can all do wheelies"!

I mis the big transfers! Atl was weak this year. Davi sendoff was cool.

All of them did wheelies down the start straight. The only difference was some did one handed wheelies!

I don't know what happened in Atlanta. Was it because it was a triple crown event and the racing was soon to start? I told everyone in our crew this was the most boring start to an SX event I've ever seen.

The lights went down, except it was 6:30 in Atlanta and the dome has huge windows all around. So it just got a little dim. Then there were no fireworks, the sound system was weak, only three guys had any sort of intro skit and all of them rode out the same portal, did a wheelie down the start straight and then waved to the crowd a little. I think Tomac and maybe Reed actually jumped most of the jumps on the track.

The racing was great but everything else about the SX in Atlanta, including the new dome, was a let down.

Totally off topic but the new dome wasn't nearly as good to me. The floor space seemed cramped, the mezzanine level in the old dome was all carpet and had nice couches and places to chill during the dead time. The new dome has wifi and charging stations. No carpet. The danged seats weren't even padded on the mezzanine level. Can't believe the blew the other place up for this.

I still watch late 90s and early 2000s races occasionally and think back to being in attendance... I was obviously much younger, but I remember everything feeling so "epic" about those opening ceremonies.

There's no showmanship anymore with the riders. It just got too damn serious. Now you have half the riders crashing themselves out on top of it.

This is the first year since 1998 that I haven't gone to a supercross race. I still haven't decided on Vegas, but I'm more looking forward to Glen Helen anyway at this point.

Last yr at indy i was like wth happened to opening ceremonies? That was my families favorite part. Rider rides out next rider blah blah. I liked the lasers and they had military drop from the roof with the flag. Awesome. Not anymore i guess.

The opening ceremonies are like lays potato chips over the years. The price keeps going up and the product we receive is less and less.

I've not been to a race in years but from the mid 90s until 07-08 i went to so many i lost track. Back in 97/98 the Opening ceremonies was awesome. Indy 97 Emig came out to AC/DC back in black and MCgrath came out to Jeremy/ Pearl Jam. The fireworks and lights were awesome. IT was one of my favorite parts of attending live. Hopefully Feld makes them great again.

Guess I'll be the boring buzzkill - I've never really cared for the opening ceremonies or the wretched music that comes with them. I mean it's okay but I just don't care and would rather just have the damn races start. I'm not picking on SX, I would've been fine with no opening ceremony at PBR last weekend. It's just not interesting. I'm there to see the competition.

I emailed Feld and they replied "safety first" so I'm not sure if that was just a generic response or what. But I don't see how lasers are dangerous. Im sure the riders aren't doing big transfers and whips because fear of injury.

This. Outside of Roczen, Reed, and Deano, there aren't really any guys with larger than life personas anymore. Maybe Mookie..... Its a shame. I miss the rockstars of the 90s and 2000s.

This was classic at A1...back in 2010. I think his playing was off - but was cool to see him do it.
And lol at the title....
