I’m in the same boat with a 250sx vs yz250. Love the counterbalancer and AER forks. Not huge on the styling. I prefer classic yz style. I like the room to work on the bike that the steel frame give and feel it’s more precise on the track but worry about dependability. Based on engine and chassis feel and setup, the Ktm/husky wins but I’m not pumped that they update every two years. My 2014 250sx is only 4 years old but it’s like 2-3 generations behind the current model

I have current bike ADHD.

I just bought a brand new 450 and it still has the stock tires on it..... (thinks to myself) “Man, I should sell my bike and get a new ______”

Do it and have yourself the best 250 two stroke made. I had a 16 125 for awhile as well as a 14 FC450 14 ktm 350 and a 15 ktm 250sx. This is the best bike I've ever had. Great controllable power that is deceivingly fast. The last gen motors would rip peoples arms off in comparison. These are smooth and vibration free.

Whoa, settle down now... I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy a KTM/Husqvarna. I simply made my last purchase based on availability, price, and an endless supply of cheap OEM and aftermarket parts. I am also a slow guy who just got back into riding after 6 years off, so I wasn't looking for bleeding edge performance either.

Prior to my time off I was very much a Suzuki fanboy, for sure. 2 RM125s, an RM250, RMZ450, and a DRZ400SM. Don't really care much these days though.

KTMs are great! Hear, hear! Feel better?

Also, speaking of fanboys, my name isn't something like YZinger420BlazeIt... is it? Funny, how that works.

To answer the OP, I think you'll be thrilled with any choice you make. I am biased toward 2 strokes in general though. I'll hop on any of them made in the last 15 years and enjoy it.

The KTM/Husqavarna's are leading the way these days. They've pretty much surpassed the YZ in performance in all categories, save for suspension, which is super close anyway... and you'd probably revalve to your liking. I have heard the stock jetting on the KTM is rough, but someone with real experience can chime in there.

I have a 2016 YZ250x that is setup more like a the regular YZ now because I went back to riding track. I love it... but I am a Novice on a really good day, so I'd love anything as long as the suspension is setup right!

I'm also in that boat... I've read a little about yz tranny problems. Is that still an issue? I'm also a little worried about spending $7,500 on a new dirt bike.. how do people afford these things???

You will spend about a dollar per hour in maintenance. They have been bulletproof for us.

I will be not likely selling the 14 this year. Waiting to see what 19 brings for the Ktms. And I am certain the yz’s won’t change but will be happy if they still continue to offer them

He is right though. I rode a 2017 TX300 with one and turned around and bought a 2018 TX300 because of the counterbalancer and how it runs. It really is awesome how smooth they are.

I'm in serious new bike ADHD mode right now. Literally the other night had trouble falling asleep because I was running over and over bike choices in my mind. That's when you know you have a problem.

Street Triple vs. Fz09 vs. SV650 and on and on....

Sell my 125 and get a used 250 vs. 144 kit vs. ...........

Have one, love it. Red powervalve spring, pro circuit silencer, plently of power and smooth delivery, pulls all the way through the power curve, really feels alot like my 300 but with over rev. Sorry that was so choppy but it really is a great bike, good suspension, nothing crazy to report, just put an old style brake pedal spring on it if you're hard on the brakes the new one will break.

Dollar per hour in maintenance? This can't be accurate. I would assume a top end and gaskets is $150? So at 40 hours that would put you at approximately $3.75...I guess if you can get 150 hours out of a top end, but what about the rod and bottom end?

No doubt that maintenance total is pretty attractive none the less.

When I had a two stroke I used the top end build interval as a time to do other stuff, right or wrong, early or late I was looking to change silencer packing, looking at and replacing reeds, etc. I had a buddy who put 100 hours on his YZ250 without changing the clutch.
