Shameless plug here. We had our test rider, Bryan Wallace, attempt qualifying in the 450 Class at Lake Elsinore aboard a mostly stock 2013 KX450F.

One of the reasons we did this was to challenge some of the rhetoric that often pops up on here that stock, or even modified, equipment can't compete against factory machinery. Take a look to see how it all went down (apologies in advance for some less than perfect audio in spots).

Such a bummer these features require Flash, which rules out using an iPad to view them. I'm way too lazy to walk into my orifice and check it out on my 'puter!

Put in the hands of a capable rider, I think any of the big 5 stock 450's could be taken to a top 20 finish at a national. Well, maybe not the Yamaha......lol jk

In 2002 my brother raced the Millville national on a bone stock CRF450R and finished 21st in the second moto. he even had the stock steel handlebars on his bike.

That's excellent! I can't believe he didn't bend those things riding through the Millville whoops.

The point of this feature was not to steal any other riders thunder who may have done this in the past, but more so to document the experience. Stock bikes are definitely capable, but heresay only goes so far.

Agreed. Derek Anderson has been doing that all year long. His bike only has suspension and exhaust. He's even had a few top ten moto finishes and at Lake Elsinore almost yanked a holeshot from the outside.

Awesome stuff... this is why 450's should not go away. Buy a bike, slap some numbers on it, go ride a National!

at Washougal 09 i was helping kiwi Luke Burkhart, he blew up his race bike in the first practice, so we pulled his practice bike out, bone stock done 70 odd hours practice, put a pipe and his suspension from the race bike in there, he went out and qualified top 20, and pulled a 4th place start in the first race, and getting points (17th i think), stock 450's are very competitive out of the box if you know how to ride them,

Funny, I raced a stock CRF450(with revalve and White Bros. slip on) at Millville in '02 and finished 22nd right on the back wheel of the guy that got 21st in the 2nd moto.

If I remember correctly, we all(18th-22nd) finished within a few seconds of each other. I was pretty pissed at your brother and the guy he was right behind for stealing my points... LOL!

Oh, I had Pro-Tapers also. Wink

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, I've owned plenty of stock bikes, attended hundreds of nationals, have no idea

what an IPAD is ( Is it for the ladies, you know....?) and I still haven't seen the princess' boobs.

Ehum, did anyone notice the bike that Chris Blose was riding at rd11 or the very last, rd12 (cant really remember wich one it was.) Anyway, it was like a 5 year old crf450, with the old number plate design. I bet that a stock kxf450 is much better than that bike.

Edit: yeah it was at rd 11, steel city.

Bryan is doing okay but has definitely had better days. Broken collarbone, fractured T6 and T4 (Had prior damage to T6 and T5), and a whole lot of bumps and bruises. I'll keep you posted.

He went over the bars on the back tabletop on the main track at Milestone. Biggest jump on the track. Wasn't pretty.

a friend of mine saw it. said the front end just fell away mid-scrub over that table... like the bike stalled in the air from maybe hitting the back brake? glad to hear he'll be ok.....
