"Stefan Everts is no longer in a critical condition. The ex-motorcrosser has contracted malaria during a trip to Congo.
Stefan Everts was admitted to the intensive care department at UZ Leuven in early December. There was not much news about Everts' condition. The family only wanted to communicate if there was a change in the situation.
That is now there. The 46-year-old Everts is no longer in a critical condition. He still stays in intensive care. There, his situation is closely monitored and only his family is admitted.
Nothing is known about the consequences of malaria and about the duration of the recovery.
"The Everts family wants to thank everyone for the many statements of support and the encouraging words", it sounds.
"She can not possibly answer those people personally, that's why she does it this way:" A big thank you all to give us a heart in this difficult period "."
The family also asks her - just like the past few weeks - to give them the necessary rest so that she can fully focus on Stefan. In new developments, a new press release will be communicated."

MXoN Germany 2013
Good news about Stefan. Brain ok, he started walking again. Nice Christmas gift for the community.
Here's a pic I took of him on a lap with Carmichael before the MXoN in 2007 at Budd's Creek, Maryland, USA.
Former world motocross champion Stefan Everts has begun his recuperation from malaria his entourage said in a press release on Tuesday. " I'm still here. It's the best Christmas present, " said the former rider and ten-time world champion.
Stefan Everts, 46, is still in the intensive care section of Leuven University Hospital. He contracted malaria in The Congo in mid-November, where he had participated in a charity race. First admitted to Hasselt hospital in December, he was then transferred to Leuven.
After emerging from critical condition, the Limburger began physical exercises as part of his recuperation on Monday. He was able to leave his bed and walk a short distance. Tests last week showed that neither his brain nor his organs suffered permanent damage following the infection of malaria.
The duration of his hospitalization and recuperation has not yet been determined. The family will be communicating through the press about new developments in Stefan Everts' health.
Stefan Everts won ten world titles and 101 Grands Prix in different motocross classes between 1988 and 2006, one of the most accomplished track records in the history of his sport. The first of his titles came in 1991 (125cc), continued in 1995, 1996 and 1997 (250cc), 2001 and 2002 (500c), 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 (MX1-GP).
He was also voted Belgian Sportsman of the Year five times (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006). Only Eddy Merckx won this prestigious award more.

"Everts to rehabilitation center
Again good news from Stefan Everts. The ten times world champion motocross, who was struck by malaria early December, has left the intensive care department of the University Hospital of Leuven and now stays at the rehabilitation center. The Legend will stay in that center for another six weeks to continue working on his recovery.
This is another big step forward for Everts. Malaria broke out at the beginning of December, after he had participated in a charity race in Congo in mid-November. Stefan fought for his life and was artificially kept asleep for a while. Everts battled back and beat his biggest competitor ever. A week ago, tests already indicated that he had not sustained permanent damage to organs and brains. The last days, Stefan again made great steps forward, after which the professors decided to move him to the rehabilitation center. Everts will continue to work hard on his recovery in the coming weeks.
His family wants Stefan to work on his rehabilitation in peace and will again communicate with new developments through a press release."
Harry Everts.
