Noticed in a JGR video on Instagram that they are training starts on the same type of metal they use in MXGP now.

Just for MEC or you guys think it might come to SX/MX in the US too?

I for one am not a fan.

They said on the USGP broadcast that the US was getting it next year too.

That would be a shame. I get that it makes it equal for everyone, but it's a ritual we should not get rid of.

As much as I loved having gate prep be a key part to getting a good start, I kind of like this move. Half the time these track workers don't do anything behind the gate, no water, no prep, no anything. Every year at budds creek, behind the gate was hard solid dirt, literally like dusty concrete. There were maybe a few gates that had moisture but once those were taken it was all hard shit. This will make the launch consistent but I liked the gate prep part.

Now the engineers on the factory teams can spend some coin optimizing launch control software for the pad and transition to different soils.

Hate it.

MX should start on dirt.

What are you going to do while you're waiting if you don't have ruts to kick at and dirt to stomp on?

To me it's just another thing taking the uniqueness away from Motocross.

I, for one, was bummed to see concrete start pads go. Maybe because I always got better starts on them? With those short indoor start straights it's more about reaction time than anything and a grate doesn't change that. Good starters will still get good starts.

An interesting question to this is...what happens for the short-legged riders who usually pile up dirt on each side of the bike for a boost? Do we see a return of starting blocks?

I'm a fan of the metal starting grate, IMO one of motocross' dirty little secrets is the fact that starts are so important and a good race for the fans can be ruined in the first ten feet. Obviously the metal thing isn't going to fix that but I think the more consistent you can make it the better. I just always found it a bit odd that the most important part of the race they just kind of roll the dice and see what they get. (Obviously I know that's not really the case, good starters can get starts anywhere)

For SX it's all part of the portable show, just bring it along with the flames above the riders and the air assisted gate drop.

For outdoors tracks it should be left up to the track owner like concrete pads and doesn't have to be universal. Initial expense vs. constant maintenance, especially with rain.

Yes, let them use blocks (or the new rear suspension starting lockdown devices) I think it's racist to discriminate against short people Tongue

I don't know about now but Swan used to be SOOO bad about gate maintenance. I'm 6ft and the damn rut behind the gate would be a foot deep and U shaped from all the shorter wheel base bikes deepening the middle part. On a big bike you had to hold the front brake and be pointed "downhill" to keep from hitting the gate with your front wheel.

Ah good, the grating is behind the gate so we will still get to enjoy moments like this

I like the grates too. Make it even for everyone.
As someone said, with starts being so important you shouldn't be able to customize your starting spot.

I like the dirt. Leave the metal or concrete for other sports.

Always thought there were some skills to packing a gate.

No. Don't need to make the sport different for the pros, and certainly don't need to have local tracks buying and maintaining them.

Looks like Dennis Jonon's old left boot.

Ok... you layed down a mat for traction and not digging a hole into the ground.

Oh yeah? Motocross should be outdoors on natural terrain too.
