Small birthday present, out with the 22 250 gasgas 2 stroke, in with the 22 yamaha yz125.

Been 15 years since i rode a 125. The 250 went poof twice in 1 hour of riding so time for a switch.

Long long time yz 250 rider here thinking of making the switch. The list with my name for the new yz 125 I ordered last July must have disappeared the dealer never called me so I ordered a new ktm. Still on the fence since I like my kyb. Congrats btw

Nice! I want to try the new YZ really bad, I’ve had my eye on one since they redesigned it.

Can you elaborate on your 250 going “poof” in 1 hr? Curious

Apparently the 22 cilinders that have the prep for tpi may have a exhaustport issue where the size of the exhaustport is off causing the piston to take a bite of the cilinder.

Did get that fixed, 0 warranty from the ktm group, now i went riding after the fix and the end of the day bike started whistling and ticking, went to drain the oil and was only 75ml left. Noone knows where the oil went since i gave her new oil 1 hour prior the first poof. 1600 euros on repairs in 1 riding hour was too much and decided to get t fixed and traded her in for the yammie.

Curious on the Gas Gas going "poof" as well.
Never the less, huge congrats on the Yam 125.
I've got a 2012 and they are so much fun

Wow, that's some serious damage to the jug and piston. I would be pretty pissed and turned off by KTM/Gas products. Good thing you weren't hurt when this grenaded the first time.

Seems strange how KTM bend over backwards to warranty things and look after some of their customers, and then just tell some of their other customers to bend over and won't get involved even if something was clearly defective.

I get they don't have to warranty anything on a race bike, and it's still far more rare for the Japs to do anything useful in these situations, but the inconsistency is still a bit weird 🤨

Got a letter in the mail 3 days after it went for the second time, some gasgas 250 mc 2strokes may have a malfunctioning ecu, its a callback to the dealers sort of deal. Also the 250 was only 18 hours old.

Nontheless that chapter is closed off and had the 125 out yesterday for riding, this is a bike you get tired on, compared to a 250 it has 0 bottom end and have to keep her pinned haha, pretty tiresome in 30 degrees after my birthday party haha!

Also coming off the 250 which had comevalves and traxx, the kyb suspension is suprisingly good. Will still have to get used to it but it’s a positive first ride.

I do think this will make me a less lazy rider again and better with lines to keep momentum going! Time will tell.

I suspect it is very dealer specific. Some dealers understand how to word things so they get covered.

What do you mean by "Apparently the 22 cylinders that have the prep for tpi " ?

I have a 22 and the cylinder looks like any other pre tpi austrian 250
We're talking about the MC250 right ?

Is this common with KTM 2 stroke bikes?
The KTM 2 Stroke engines have generally been solid, especially considering before any mods they usually have a little extra bark over a YZ (I know plenty prefer the YZ delivery, and plenty know how to get them making all the power you'd ever want, just saying).

There are soooo many haggard old 250's / 300's over here in the UK that have been through rivers and thrown down hills and boiled over in the woods and neglected for years with no proper care or maintenance and are still going strong.

At least in the US I thought that was only on 125s.

Believe it’s the 125’s with the recall to get the cdi programmed with a lower Rev limit. Haven’t seen anything with the 250s. Maybe there is.

Is this reason OP's bike detonated maybe?

Noone knows, i do know 3 other 22 ktm/gasgas 250 2stroke owners that like me, have had their cilinder detonate 3 times on them all while having it fixed, running proper 98 or 102 octane gas with proper oil. Can’t always roll 6 i guess. I traded mine in because i didn’t have a good feeling for the bike anymore as it went twice now, i sold it and closed the chapter off, hopefully more lucky with this one.

EDIT

I just looked at my letter, as it is in dutch i will roughly say what they recall for.

Because of a malfunctioning production process there might have been fitted a malfunctioning ecu on your bike, this in the worst case scenario may cause engine damage with a crash as result.

Got the letter 3 days after getting it fixed the 2nd time. This is about the 2022 MC250 2stroke

Gotcha, yes I would not want to ride bike that has blown twice especially in such a short time.
I would drop that thing like a hot potato. I would feel bad for the next person that buys it lol.

Interesting,,
the page says applicable to ALL markets but on the USA GG recall page, only the 125 is listed

Well did some digging and the USA recall page is just not up to date.
Plugged my VIN in the Service area and the recall is there....
