Spoke with my wallet

A little different this time. As a Moto Dad, I'd love to buy the latest and greatest for my 12 year old. But, he'll never go to Lorettas or be a Pro. Heck, he may never be fast. I never was.

So when it came time to move to an 85, I spoke with my wallet. Used 85s? They are all ticking time bombs. It's not if, it's when, and how much. New 85s? KTM/Husky - $6 grand. Um, no, Mom would come unglued and I can't blame her. 2019 YZ85? Good luck finding one, and MSRP is not gonna happen. Suzuki? Come on.

So a 2018 KX85 it is. Under $4k OTD with a small goodie bag. He cried when we left the Husky TC85, but he's perfectly happy with the KX on a stand in the garage. I'll tear it down over the weekend, grease it and torque everything, and then we'll go ride. $2 grand buys a lot of track time.

As a kid who never had a dad growing up but rides now as a big kid adult, just awesome! Keep being super dad. Congrats to little dude too.

Awesome. I remember coming home to a new 1980 RM80 in my basement. Something I'll never forget.. Nor will your son.. He'll always remember..and its all about the memories we make.

Nice! My first bike was a KX60. Something about owning a green bike. Love my 250f the more I ride. Hope he likes it! Happy riding

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.

Nice!! The KTM/Husky 85's are trick, no doubt. But $6000 for an 85 is insanity.

The Kawi is a damn good bike, and still looks good. If I had a kid that age I would do the same thing.
Send the suspension off and put an FMF pipe on it. And you still saved money.

90% of 85 riders would do just as well on it. imo

Exactly my plan. Hour meter from day 1 and keep up on the maintenance. Break it in this fall and over the winter do a few things to it for next year. Then ride the pee out of it.

True that. Getting my first new bike or any bike as a kid is something that you will never forget. I remember crying with joy.

To the OP, keep up being an awesome dad!

Y’know, my first race bike was a KX60 back when the 65’s were killing it. Since then I’ve pretty much had the latest and greatest and I’m slow as shit. And to this day, the best times I’ve ever had riding were on that old KX. The newer bikes didn’t make me a better rider, nor did it make it anymore fun

My first bike was a PW80 back in 2000, I thrashed that thing for 6 months then my parents bought me a 1998 KX80. Been on green ever since cool
