It's finally my turn to start one of these threads! After riding the same 2010 YZ450F for the last 8 years, I figured it was time for a change. I picked up this beauty last week, and am so excited. It's an '05 with what I guess to be about 5 or 10 hours on it. It was owned by a farmer up in Scotland who used it for a bit and then put it in storage for the last 12 or 13 years. Unfortunately it wasn't cleaned very well before it sat, so there's some pitting on the frame and engine cases. Aside from that, some hard tyres and some leaky fork seals, the bike is mint - it still has new bike feel Woohoo

The bike had fresh fuel, a carb clean and a gearbox oil change before I picked it up. I'm going to flush the coolant and brake fluid too. Aside from the gear shift stopper fix, is there anything else you think I should look at? I want to put some new bodywork on it as well, just to save the OE stuff in case I ever decide to sell it (although I suspect this might be a bike for life). Still undecided on 2005 style plastics or the 2015+ style. Thoughts?

Also if anyone wants to buy my 114 hour 450 let me know Whistling

I'm not really a fan of newer style plastics or restyle kit. I'd say new older style plastics and graphics and save the stock plastics. It's very rare!

+1

That shape you have now is spot on - especially if you were to get graphics that factory Yam used in 2004/2005. Such a clean look. Personally, I can't stand the new shape stuff.

Ironic that the wall behind the bike has three "No Smoking" signs on it.

Good thing he didn't start it up or the Bobbies would be all over him.

Nice! I'd go for the 05 factory Yamaha look on her. She is perfect, I wouldn't even think of trying to make that bike look like a 15+....

Greatest BIKE of all time!
The YZ 250 is STILL one of the BEST PLATFORMS to build on and NOT get to expensive! But UFO Plastics are better looking than the old or new OEM plastics.

I did not want a 450 WEIGHT and EXPENSE, but I do have the best VALUE bike of all time!

Nice find! Also I'm pretty sure the shift stopper fix was only on the YZ125.

Nice find OP! I love my 05! Great bike and the forks aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. They can be made to work very well!

You lucky dude! That’s one of the best bikes out there and yeah it doesn’t look like it’s even broken in yet!

Congrats on a great bike. I like the original plastics, they've came around full circle and look perfect.

Shift stopper prob applies to this YZ250 also. It has the stupid ball bearing design. They just don't fail as often on the 250 as they do on the 125. He needs the stopper from the newer YZ250's. It changed in like 2016 or so. Need to check part numbers.

Congrats on the nice find! I recommend a braided front brake line(and oversized rotor if you can afford). Makes a huge improvement.

Cheers for the input guys. I decided to go for a clean look based on the '05 bodywork - plain backgrounds and GYTR shroud and tank graphics. I felt like it was appropriate to embrace the era Smile

marcopolo400 and FGR01 the parts diagrams that I've checked have the '05 250 as having the shift stopper with the bearing. I've not taken the clutch off to have a look yet though, so I am prepared to stand corrected.

Doddy, funny you should mention that. Steel braided hoses and racing brake fluid have always been the first thing on my list for new bikes - I've boiled standard fluid before on dry, hardpack! I'll ride it a bit before I look at oversized rotors. The bike on its own was at the upper end of my budget, so I don't have much more liquidity to put into this asset Grinning Also I'd probably prioritise a suspension revalve and stiffer springs over an oversized rotor.

Not positive about 2 strokes but I don't believe they went aluminum frame until 06 which would give you SSS suspension also.

05' was the first aluminum frame on the yz250. Was the first "brand new" motocross bike I ever bought. (for me anyway, the kids had new bikes lol ) The SSS forks came out the next year of course haha

05 was aluminum frame. The one sumdood is talking about is sitting in my garage Wink

Yes, the 2005 has the old style with the ball bearings. This is the bad one that can fail.

You currently have part # 5CU-18140-01-00

You need part # BF1-18140-00-00

They switched to the newer part in 2016. It has a solid wheel and no bearing to fall apart.

Sick ass find.

If ya wanna go modern look later....Use the ufo restyled kit. Keep your older style airbox. Get some 08+ forks.

And change the thread name to “spoke with my wallet” !!!!!!! Damn you!
