I believe this map is about 18 years old. How many of these tracks have you ridden or raced?

Hungry Valley and Ascot Park. Ascot was great because it was only ten minutes from my house at the time. After it closed, we would sneak in there weekly until Gardena PD kicked us out.

I live a mile away from where Carlsbad Raceway was. Its not just a business park with a Tesla dealership, a car wash, a weed shop smile and some other bullshit. I used to wake up on weekends to the sound of 2strokes starting off the line there, and even got to ride practice there once (they had an age restriction and the track closed when I was 17). Such a historic track taken away for the allmighty dollar. Other track I used to love was called Amago, out on the 76 highway passed Pala raceway. Place was unpredictable conditions wise as the tribe took care of the track but you could always count on two different track layouts, with two different types of dirt. One was a fast and big moto track with slick harder dirt, and the other was a GP style track through trees and hills with more loam. Used to see all the NCY guys testing out there with box vans. Cahuilla creek is still a gem. Pala is the cool guy spot of all cool guy spots.

There's also another couple tracks not on that list that lasted a short time off of the 15 and in the Adelanto area: Stoddard Wells, MotoPlex up the road from Sunrise/Adelanto and 333 MX Park.

El cajon mx was around in 02-03. Not sure when it shut down but is a vacant lot til this day.

When Saddleback and my beloved Indian Dunes closed, that weighed heavily along with my job to move to AZ in 1987 and the wide open areas to ride and make tracks.

Wanted to ride out of my garage and lived that dream for a few years and now history repeats itself and not in a good way.

We have lost a LOT of good tracks as well and that is mostly why I don't race anymore at 62.....sad

Wish 24 thru 28 were still in operation.

I turned 61 this year so I was fortunate to race at a lot of those tracks, counted 14.

Several more I remember from the 70’s that aren’t in there.

Rialto, San Bernardino Orange show had a little stadium track where they raced cars, two n the desert near Palm Springs called Seaview and Fly in raceway I believe. Saw there was a track in San Clemente years ago....maybe 60’s early 70’s.

My favorite part about those days were that you went to race and not just practice. Huge turnouts and it seemed you could race 7 days a week if you were up for it

Cost of new bikes may be the culprit.

|

12/15/2020 10:52 AM

Whoah, I've been to a lot of them:

Cantamar
Barona
Carlsbad
Starwest
Perris
Glen Helen
Raceplex (VMC)
Adelanto (Sunrise)
Mammoth
Rainbow II (Comp Park)

I've raced at all the above. They missed Competitive Edge and El Cajon.

I agree. I could buy a new bike each year and go racing and fund it all with my after school busboy job

it'd be interesting to see a map like this of the whole country.

nearly every state had atleast 2 mx tracks at one point i believe. now some have none at all ...

First thing I noticed. Not sure why it's not included on this map. I believe El Cajon Speedway closed at the end of 2004. I rode there at night in 2002 and 2003 for sure. Some of the scariest times on a motocross track. Tweaker central, that place.

What's current tally? Off top of my head my nearby tracks are:

1) Cahuilla Creek MX, Anza
2) Perris MX, Perris
3) State Fair MX, Perris
4) Fox Raceway, Pala
5) Barona Oaks, Ramona (currently covid-19 closed)
6) Glen Helen, San Bernadino
7) LACR
8) Lake Elsinore MX, Lake Elsinore

That's 8 tracks within 1.5'ish hours of me. That's pretty amazing I'd say.

I do miss 212 Land... and Milestone.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that it' been barely- regulated development and unbridled greed, more than the "oppressive" hand of the "Green Mafia" that has most adversely affected our places to moto....flame away (with an approved spark arrestor, of course)

Hungry Valley/Gorman/I-5/Quail MX is still open. (Whatever it's called today.)

Isn't VMC listed as #7? Or was Raceplex something else? I was only like 7 but I had some great times on the kx65 out at VMC! Would be great to see it come back. The land hasn't been developed and most of the track is still there.

Valencia, CA,

Off of Highway 126, just West of the I-5.

Basically behind Six Flags Magic Mountain

Indian Dunes seems to have this near mythical status amongst older riders in California, can anyone elaborate on that a bit? What made the place so special? Was it even, or was it the time and place all together to create this edenic memory of Indian Dunes?

It had everything you could ask for. Speedway track, the National track, Pee Wee track, the Shadow Glen track, plus you could cross the creek (depending on water flow) and go ride in the hills. When they did their Grand Prix's they would make these monumental loops that took what felt like 20 minutes. laughing

There is more I'm missing I'm sure.

Did they ever open that big new compound that was going in off Highway 74? I think it was supposed to be between Meadowbrook and Perris. I remember reading about it here a few years ago. It was right about the same time Milestone was going away. Is that still in the works?

I worked across the street from the track at the time so I'd ride there after work all the time. The track was so sketchy after they watered it. But I had so much fun there! Rumor was they closed the mx and oval to expand the airport. The airport still hasn't expanded one bit. Sad.

They said they are hoping to break ground in the next 4-5 months according to a recent update in their newsletter

Saddleback II? Maybe they are counting SBII with the original track just down the street.

closed at the end of 2001 when they flooded the track with water from the lake.

I saw James in person for the first time there in November 2001, he jumped over my head on the main track.
