Apparently he (the dealer) knows Ricky Johnson and the deal was arranged through Ricky. It's a real shame I was in such a hurry to get out of there because he told me a bunch of things about the bikes. I probably got half the stories mixed up. In a post above I said the engine was highly modded, but Ping says it is not. I think I got my stories mixed up with another bike (like the RM500 for example).

I could have stayed there for hours, but I had to do the trip in one day and it's about 5.5 hours one way. I was only there for about 30 minutes.
How many bikes did he have in total? Looks like he has a pretty good collection. Just looking at the pics you posted I don't think I would of been able to leave his place with just 1 bike. Would of been a costly trip lol.

I would of had to bring back that '86 replica with me along with the yellow 2017 YZ 250. Possibly that little CR 80 as well and obviously the one you just picked up.

Which Suzuki is hidden behind the '86 replica?

Good looking bike, and a good handling bike ( yep, I can remember that far back) , any idea what the seller is asking on the Bailey replica ? I really need one more motorcycle....

I would say this thread delivers!
I had the '86 CR125- one of those "magic bikes." Handling is very good, you could say. Enjoy.

87 CR125 was my first big bike... bagged a lot of groceries to save up for it back in 88. My buddy had a 86 and we would ride out of our garages in AZ every afternoon when we got home from school... awesome memories... awesome motorcycle... and awesome purchase Harry!
I had the 87 CR125 too. My god what a bike & time in MX. Good work Harry.

Good score ! Owned the big brother version & raced it back in the day. Good memories..
Those CR's of that era were truly ahead of the other manufacturers. Enjoy the build process !

wow! I need to ride my streetbike over there and take it all in! the 101 YZ is so right
Yamaha should have had the graphic designer for the 101 bike do the graphics on their 50 and 60 year retro bikes- i thought they fell short a bit compared to this thing

That guy has got some nice bikes. The RM500 is amazing, and might have been ridden once. He got from UNC (I think he said UNC). Some engineering professor at the college was into MX and for a class project they built a one-off RM500 using a KX500 motor. Suzuki donated the frame and plastic. Takasago donated the wheels. The Ohlins suspension was just gorgeous. To my eyes, it looked like it had never been ridden. It's loaded with trick parts. Hydraulic clutch, on and on.

To me, the 1986 David Bailey CR250 was the prize there. It was in very good condition. I have a bunch of pictures and will post them soon.

Thanks one and all. I will do a build thread, but it is going to be awhile. I need to do a once over on it and make sure it has fluids, air filter, etc. He said it has been sitting for years. If it checks out, I will take it out once and then put it away until we get into the new house where I can get at it in the proper environment. And yes, it will be restored to correct graphics. I hate the yellow side plates. Blech.
I saw this CL ad, he has some YZ125s that look awesome! Ever since RacerX came out with that YZ250 video for the Rick Johnson replica I've been wanting to do this (when the time and money is right).

He had to be referring to UNC-Charlotte, they have a pretty big engineering school and a motorsports engineering program...I had a buddy who went through it and they were always working on cool stuff.

Some more pics of the various bikes that turned my crank. First up is the 86 Bailey 250 replica. And below I give you the RM500.

Apparently the bike below was recently featured in Racer X and was built by David Pingree. The picture sucks, but the bike was gorgeous.

All these bikes are for sale. If you're within driving distance, make him an offer. He seemed like a reasonable, decent guy.

Love the Scag mower!

For real, congrats on the Honda and hope it actually gets ridden on your new track. Speaking of the new track, we're due for an update on the house in non moto. Much ty!

Harry, Nice bike.
But what I find most intriguing is the term "excess cash" never had any of it but I got to get me some of that.
Congrats on the bike, new toys are fun!

I had an ‘87CR 125. That thing was an absolute rocket ship. And after I had the suspension revalved, it was the perfect machine. God I miss those days.

You are a lucky man Harry.
