Last year it seemed like Ritchie and Co did everything they could to make the Leap impossible to jump during the national, adding a weird roller in the corner and shortening the run. Seemed like only a few 450s were doing it, which is lame. Most 450 guys should be jumping it for the national, IMO. It’s the whole draw of that track.

In a perfect world you have 1-2 250F guys sending it too

Make the Leap doable again

Even if they make it more doable, it probably will depend on how the lines form on race day. If lap times don't show it as faster, then people still aren't going to do it. Although I do think it is cool when maybe 1 or 2 guys takes the inside line on the approach and still sends it. It just seems like the last couple years, riders had to go way outside to clear it clean, so there was no real point. Depends how the lines form. But if they can stay inside and stay low and not lose time, I'm sure it'll be that way again. Most guys went inside and faded outside, last year. I guess we will see how it is this year.

Total agreement that it should be doable by the entire 450 class and a few top 250's. Nothing better than a back of the pack nobody sending it and throwing some style for the fans and showing just what a badass everyone who lines up on the gate really is.

2 yrs ago a cr250 at the Vet fest 2-st class jumped it from the inside rut on the 1st lap. The guy rips he won 450 a at red Bud too on the cr250.

I wish they would really slow down the inside line/double-single option. Make it difficult, but a second faster, to send the triple

I agree it would be awesome if they could balance the 2 lines a little better... But let's face reality here, the lines change throughout the day and you get what you get. Let's just hope we get some good racing!

Even with the roller it’s doable by the entire 450 class but most of them don’t have the balls to huck it. It was never jumped by the whole class. But i agree, take that roller out to make it easier

What is point to have jump that no-one can jump?

Back of the pack nobody seems kinda harsh. That dude is still a badass on a dirtbike. Most riders will never be fast enough to qualify for a national. Show some respect.

Exactly. No idea why I am getting down votes, for just explaining what I am seeing. I'm just pointing out that it seems like the race lines dictate whether or not people do the leap or not more than anything else. Obviously it is cooler for the fans when it's being jumped. If the track crew slow the inside line down, guys usually still start the corner inside and then fade across, mid corner right before the face (and still don't end up jumping it.) KR was doing that a lot last year. Maybe this year it will be different. I just don't think it's all on Redbud staff for the riders not doing it, I think the race lines equally play a role.

interesting. I love it when that's the case. Or a jump that was never met to be a jump until a Stewart or other person decides it is. Highlight reel stuff that makes moto so fun to watch.

Why don't the folks at Redbud want people jumping it? Liability? I heard they weren't allowed to hit it at the KTM intro also.

Good question, why have they been nerfing the jump for years? The roller, didn’t they even move the turn closer a while ago?

Been to 18 Redbud Nationals and the worst I've seen the leap was when it was too easy and the "throttle chop" bumps became way too sketchy at the top for Kenny and Eli in the lead.

I agree that just a few 450's jumping is boring, and when you scrub the double and landing, they are not losing hardly any time. Wishing it could save way more time going for it.

Hard balance for a track to have...but I still love seeing the first one each year in practice going for it.

Of course, I'm exaggerating a bit by saying the whole class jumping it, but I have been there when basically every factory 250 2 stroke would jump it. I was also there the day Guy Cooper was the first person to jump it in practice and he was on a 125.

Ferrandis nearly quaded onto the roller after it mid moto last year right?

If they aren't going to make it doable, then they should bulldoze it and put something completely different there. It is completely moronic to have it if it can't be done.

I remember seeing Jason Lawrence in (07?) Go way off track in practice and used the fence as a berm to clear the leap.

You are right. Pastrana on the 125 also did this outside the berm practice technique and ended with taco'd front wheel.

Would rather see everybody jump it than nobody. It’s still a huge jump no matter how much run up you have

I don't jump the leap but i do ride Red Bud from time to time. It's one of those jumps that feels very jumpable on the run up. You have to slow down considerably to not over jump the double portion. I'm sure it gives the riders a nice physical break while floating through the air.

Every 450 rider could jump it if they want to. 250’s maybe not, but some 250’s will jump it this weekend. They did last year.

I'm going get FLAMED for this but I'd like to see them reimagine the whole north side of the track leap included.

I agree. It's been many years with the same north layout. Before in the mid 90's they had some great "cross" layouts and jumps (still with larocco's leap)...but it was on the skinnier side of width. Some great photos I have of the old layout with the mud practices and no sand! Something different on the north would be nice.

After the ski jump, in the dowd / windham era, they used to go downhil / straight, through deep ruts pinned, and straight up the south side hill with an uphill ski jump. As fast as they could go, they would sail uphill out of sight...miss that section. Man I'm getting old.

I think he said he isn't making enough money to race Redbud this year, or something.
