Hit this big free ride double Renner is hitting and not wind up in the hospital?

I am somewhat allergic to big air although I have always wished I could get the stones to just hit something like this. I am OK on a "sane" mx track where things are groomed a little more but never understood how guys just size shit up like this and go hit it.....and not wind up dead.

Is shit like this superhuman or more common than I think?

It's mainly all about the camera angles and positioning. He's really only about 3' in the air but the way the cameras are set up makes it look a lot higher.

I had to bust-out and McGrath said "I'm not gonna be the first one to do it". 5th gear tapped wide, you can't lose.

Torco, you seem like a good dude and all and I work across the street from ya, but that is NOT only 3 feet off the ground. I'd say thats a good 8-10 foot up. That looks to be in between Shell Reef and Pumpkin Patch Trl.

That was just some of my lame sarcastic humor. Some of those jumps out there throw them up well over 15'-20'. I've been on a few rides out there with some of those guys and its waaaaay bigger in person and a lot crazier.

Most competent riders could handle the camelback jump he starts with. You just need the speed to clear the middle crest and it's forgiving after that. The bigger ones further in are superhuman stuff to me. You have to develop a feel for that kind of crap. Coming up short with that kind of speed usually ends in a wicked high speed endo.

I could spend 15 hours straight playing Motocross Madness (the first edition) in those mountains. Sweet 1997...

Metz was wearing some red and blue fox gear on a Kawi, right?

You've changed maaan...
It's kind of true what you were saying... If the gap was filled, it wouldn't look as high, although it would still be a get-stuffed jump!

When I was a Junior, I struggled big time with confidence when it came to doubles or triples, but tabletops, no matter how big, were never an issue.

Yep!!! But we all know he busts big... Bigger than everyone! All he needs is some dirt on the side of the road.Tongue

Might as well put this here.

More common than you think IMO. I see kids hit 120' doubles on 85s at a local practice track that I'm tentative to jump. Problem is they are stiff as a board in the air and if it ever went bad, it would be real bad.

Love T2 and Fly, but McGrath's style on that RM is just unbelievable! I watched him over and over and tried to replicate everything I saw style and technique wise.

That was definitely some cool shit,

I still remember watching it for the first time and watching mc land in that wheelie at cooper's house. I just turned and looked at my cousin with my mouth wide open and he was doing the same thing. I bet we watched that clip 100 times

A better question is who here has gone for a 100' double and come up short. I did it once and came up about 6' short which is about the worst distance you could come up on a double. I hit, smashed my chin into my handle bars and bounced over the other side. Somehow I managed a black eye and some sore nuts. No other injuries but I was done for the day.

This is completely different than hitting a designated take off and landing. And I can tell you right now that nobody is hitting 120' doubles on stock 85's. Superminis? Yea, but 85's, no.

This kind of riding is my favorite though! Too bad it's hard to find anything of decent size in western Maryland. Usually rocks or trees get in the way. Someday I am gunna take a chainsaw to a few hills...

More than 3'. But you can take a 50' board say and lay it on the ground and it looks 35'. Stand it up straight in the air and looks more like 100'. Weird how that works eh?

Ahhhh Man steel roots. My all time fav.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGj5IQXdgQ4#t=50

That video is the best and also introduced me to C.O.C Long whip Big America...song during the dunes starting at 8:05 is just badass!

It also seems to me that it was all more fun back then for the pros. Could not imagine Rv2 or Dungey out riding the dunes or goon riding with the pressure today.

Ummm....yeah, they are. Nowhere did I say the word "stock". It's also not much different than a designated take off and landing because the take off and landing are gigantic. There is no measuring it up. I tried once...bad idea. Also flat spotted my front rim when I went long one time. I don't even really see what part of my post is debatable other than the first sentence since you have never been to the track and didn't see the kids jumping it. By the way, the owner said they measured it at 130', but I said 120', because this is Vital after all and someone is bound to have a dumb comeback.

Love me some Terrafirma 2 and steel roots but hate it when I've come up short on the 100 footers. BlinkPinch

There was a time in my life I would have loved to hit some shit like that. Those days are gone now haha

Not that it was natural terrain like that or anything. But we had some crazy stuff. One of my buddies used to build his landings and take offs so steep on his tracks. There was blue paint from my Yamaha frame, on the peak of the landings from coming up short. Man we were some idiots lol. A nice lil round landing would have prevented so many trips to the ER. Silly

When you said 85's, I'm imagining a kid a pretty stock 85, not a race built bike. But yea, I've never been to the track so I guess I can't comment. But I have hit a 120' double before an I know and 85 wouldn't have made that one! Haha

I have to disagree with you on natural terrain jumps being like jumps on a track. Maybe some, but usually I think it's more difficult. Typically one lined take off and the landing isn't usually a straight shot. That, and the run up to some natural jumps is less than ideal.

I agree with you on the points about natural terrain verses a track. I only meant it's not much different in the way that you can't measure it up. This is just an example about crazy kids and why I think it's not that uncommon these days. Wasn't trying to compare the two jumps. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to hit the booter in the Renner video! I will be 29 on Monday so I guess you could say I'm getting old. Silly

not to take anything away from renner, no doubt the guy can ride. That first big double with all the rc heli shots has been around for a few years. I doubt he was the first to hit it. It used to be safer but the rut is getting to the point pegs are going to start dragging. The gnarliest jump is at 0:54. I can't believe they didn't get more shots of that ever that was.

what blows me are the no name guys going superhuman out there. Randoms building and hitting most of that stuff first
