It's 1981. The kid might be 14. The dad lines him up on a '74 Ossa 250. No silencer, gas dripping out of the carb, totally used up bike. The checkers are waving. The kid can't start it. Dad kicks it a couple times and says, "Now if you drop her, don't let her die."

If you say anything that gives your child added pressure on the start line you’re a POS. Go get a bike and stop living your dreams through your kid.
Granted once said child is old enough to invite the pressure and want to win at all costs then great.

In the Whiskey Throttle Show with Villopoto, RV said his Dad gave him a few chances to quit.

"We can quit anytime. We could by a boat."

You know it would be hard for a parent to throw in the towel if their kid was as good as RV so I thought that was pretty cool.

My dad always told me to go for it, do your best, try to have a good start and have fun and be carefull and safe. Of course there were some words over the years when i did dumb things and crashed and threw away great results. And i get it now, he was just as disapointed as myself, but we always discussed it on the way home how to to better next time. No big scene's. All with respect. Only time he threatened me to sell everything was in a period i had bad grades. O and yeah when i was 13 or 14, if i got involved with drugs, beer or smoking. The happiness and after talks on the way home after good results were the best. Nothing beats that happines. I have so much good memories about us a little team. He was a great, great motodad. Now he's gone, these are the moments i missed the most.

I knew that it also can be different... My neighbour once filmed a piece of a PW race when she was with us on a race, and you can hear the ''dad'' yelling and telling his 6 year old or younger son he is a dick when he went to slow through a corner... I still have it on a VHS tape.

My experiences with such family's is that the kid's are burned out at 16 and stopt riding.

My older brother to me as I came off the track: “Did your skirt get caught in your chain out there?”. 40 years later and it’s still funny.

I remember falling in a pretty blind area of the track from spectating and getting up way behind to come past the Dad's and my father had his arms up in the air in the \_O_/ stance like he'd questioned my entire existence. Still haunts me to this day.

I think Moto Dad's that have a disgusted face with silence are way worse than most words.

When we first started hitting 'National level' off road races I would get intimidated and not ride up to my ability, not even close really. Finally after 3 or 4 trips my Dad says...."Look, this is all for fun but if you don't start riding like you do at home we aren't gonna spend the time doing these cause it ain't fun getting whooped up on, man the fuck up and get it done." Brought home my first trophy from a National that weekend! I'll never forget that speech.

Nobody likes a super crazy moto dad that treats his kid like shit, but I think we can all agree us scum bag dirt bikers are cut from a different cloth and sometimes the old man just needs to tell you how it is.

My dad was also a fan of "If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough."

"Have fun! Go kick their ass!!!" Right before every moto, on the gate as the starter is pointing us down. Getting the chills just thinking about it now. He does not look at this site much, but in case he sees this post, LOVE YOU DAD!!!

To me from my boss/mentor, back in my day:
"They don't give trophies/pay money to win practice."
"Be smooth"
"Never follow"

From me to my son:
"Everyone goes fast on the easy stuff. You make up time by being faster in the slow stuff".
"Have fun"
"Ride smooth"

I overheard a Dad at a local race years ago giving his little racer a pre-race pep talk....... "Ok son, there are 12 kids in your class today, and based off how you looked in practice, you're probably gonna end up around 14th." Still laugh at that one all these years later.

Quotes from my late Dad, who I loved: "I hate motorcycles." "Haven't you grown out of that yet?"

My uncle took me to the races rather than my Dad. He was a cheap bugger (like most motocrossers). He made me pay for everything because "you're not my son." Thought that was a bit harsh but oh well, still some of my best memories.

Anyway, I remember running out of chain lube and pinching a spray while he was out for his moto. He came back to the pits and shouted, "I smell chain lube. Did you use my chain lube?!" Scared the shit out of me and I still remember it vividly today.
