Shoulder injuries...

Been having some serious issues with my shoulder feeling loose and what not, saw a doctor yesterday and he’s pretty certain I have a labral tear, anybody have experience with this and what I can look forward to?

Thanks.

Learn how to pop it back in. When it dislocates, the sooner you get it back in the better. Mine are so loose I can dislocate the right one just by throwing a frisbee. It gets worse when I don’t ride. Ride a lot and do shoulder shrugs to keep the muscles strong enough to hold everything together. If that doesn’t work, soak it from the inside with Miller Lite. By the way, never tell your doctor you ride moto. Most of them hate motorcycles. Tell them you ride mountain bikes. They love bicycles.

Lmao. Well I’m gonna have it fixed. It’s to the point to where I can’t ride.

That's the best advice I have heard for any injury, lol.

I have one that is pretty screwed up and no time whatsoever to go get it snipped on. I just squeeze in a little time with the Chiropractor for some therapy when it gets too bad. People always like to poke fun at the chiros but they have helped me out of quite a few issues. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.Wink

Just finished shoulder arthroscopy for labrum tear, scope the joint cartiledge and pin the bicep tendon and muscle into my humerus (surgeon said “it’s like a drywall anchor”) drilled into the bone. Anyway, 6 mos of rest, rehab and PT and no moto. Sucks but when done it is as healthy as the other shoulder. Do it now, it gets worse and way longer rehab if you tear the labrum any more. They have to sew it back into your shoulder socket and you risk a lot of collateral rotator cuff damage if you wait.

3x shoulder repair under my belt.

#1 Do the surgery.

#2 Do all of the PT and then some. Non-compliance with PT is why people have problems. focus on range of motion first, strength will come back but most range of motion needs to be back by 8 weeks or it never comes back.

#3 wait until the doc releases you to 'mountain bike; again.

I had tears in the front and back because I kept dealing with dislocations and just, “putting the Miller Light on it”. Ended up getting both fixed also had a chip in my humerus that had to be worked on. Again this was because I kept pooping it in and out instead of getting it fixed.

I wish I did it sooner. The nice thing is that you can schedule it to work for you. I planned around my work and it was fine. 2 months in a sling and 4 months I was trail riding my 125. 6 months I was back to normal and surfing.

PT, eating well, no drinking or smoking is key. My guy tightened mine a lot and the first 2 weeks was very painful. You can be out of the sling when sleeping or in the couch, just can’t move the arm.

I went to a sports specialist who works with pro athletes so he understands what I do for fun. I suggest finding someone who knows sports and can help you get back out doing what you love.

I had a labrum tear on the upper end by the shoulder and then it pulled off the bicep (not fully). Rehab is about 2-3 months for full mobility and i'd say about 6 months for it to fully heal.

I had a small tear with rotator cuff issues. Sucks big time man. Wasn't bad enough for surgery. Physical Therapy helped me. I learned the exercises and did that at home every night. I still had issues. For 6 months my shoulder hurt. No matter what helped - the therapy nothing. I started lifting weights that year, and it resolved all of my shoulder issues. I'm not sure if it was just the time after the injury or what, but I swear lifting solved it. It hurt like a bitch for 2 months of lifting though, but after the 3rd and 4th I was like "hmm...My shoulder doesn't hurt AT ALL?". I did power lifting and avoided any movement that hurt my shoulder (lat pull downs, face pulls, single handed pull backs/lateral rows, Behind the back press, incline bench) but I did a powerlifting routine (squats, rows, deadlift, military press, bench) and made huge progress with shoulder strength.

I have a elongated shoulder socket. I used to get subluxations (semi dislocation) quite often, but now I workout 3-6 days a week and now it hasn't happened in 6 months. I'm def the strongest I've ever been at 35 and it feels good.

I had 6 shoulder dislocations and finally opted for the surgery. I knew it was time when I managed to get the joint back in place by myself! (Usually it was a trip to the ER that did it.)
Surgery was in 2004 and the shoulder has never come back out. It feels about 98% awesome and 2% painful. Every now and then I'll panic when I feel a jolt from picking something up out of the back seat, or when I go bowling or something, but most of the time it's golden. The doctor told me I'd lose some range of motion, but that wasn't the case with me.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have rotator cuff tears in both shoulders from the military. The medical treatment in the military was less than stellar and they loaded me up on painkillers and ibuprofen and I didn't know any better at the time.

It was bad enough that my shoulders will literally just lock up and I can't lift my arms past 90 degrees. I had to partially dislocate them to get them above my head and then the same thing to get them down. This would happen a few times a year and it would take a lot to loosen them up. I have tried alternative means before surgery at this point... stretches, lifting, cortisone, bands, etc.

I finally got a good PT and chiro and determined an exact routine to do every day. I'm a desk guy these days so that can make the problem even worse. I am currently battling them, but with this routine, it is Slowly but surely getting better and they have not locked up since I started this routine.

I do this 5 times a day (It doesn't take long)
1. reverse shoulder flexes (5-10 times depending on how long you hold it) I usually do it 10x and hold each one for 10 seconds.
2. 5x - Downward dog to push up position. Once my shoulders started to feel better I combined a deep pushup with each one.
3. Put your hand on a table and put your body weight on it. Keep your hand in place and walk back and squat down. You will feel your lats and shoulder pull and stretch. Keep pressing down with your hand and walk back up to your starting position. I do this 3x per shoulder.
4. Strengthen your shoulders so they don't slump forward.
5. Deep tissue massage. I also use a little rubber ball my PT gave me and I roll it on the front part of my shoulder and pecs to help loosen up the muscles.

Sorry for the descriptions. You can likely find the same stretches and such on Youtube. These guys are great: https://www.youtube.com/user/physicaltherapyvideo

I forgot about that last part - Foam rolling and deep tissue message with a blue rubber raquet ball helped out a lot as well.
