So this weekend while racing I dislocated my shoulder for the 3rd time this year, not because of a crash (though this time I did crash as a result of the dislocation). I've looked through a few old threads and found some good information and it seems like the real solution is surgery. At the moment though I would like to make it through the rest of the season before the snow starts flying. I was wondering if anyone has experience with shoulder braces? I was thinking of the brace below, but any insights would be greatly appreciated. Also have an AC separation on the same shoulder, but I've had that for over a decade now.

The shoulder braces do work to an extent, but they aren’t the golden ticket. I found using the bracte and taping it every time I rode helped, but any hard impacts and it would still come out unfortunately. I just gave in and I am now 5 weeks recovering from a laterjet procedure. Hopefully I will be able to ride again without it coming out every time. Wishing you all the best as it’s such a shit injury.

Bummer to hear man!

As both of you have already wrote, unfortunately surgery is the best option when it fits into your life schedule. I delt with the problem for 3 years and maybe 7-8 dislocations. Finally got surgery and wish I did it way sooner. But anyways...

As far as braces, I used this and helped to an extent.

I also used KT tape and did my shoulder like this video as best I could every ride:

Glad to hear your operation has worked out. I’ve been putting it off for so long, but it just kept on getting worse.

That’s the same brace I used as well. It’s comfy, and I didn’t really notice it when I was riding. After a couple of rides with one, I didn’t want to ride with out it.

Think I'll give the EVS brace a try. I had my shoulder taped up like in the video, which helped unfortunately not enough.

I fought my left shoulder for years, and finally got it chopped while after a terrible AC separation. Surgery worked wonders, and I can feel my right being ready to pop (just like the left felt before) so I hope to get it chopped before it blows out.

Have not used braces, but doubt they would help much if your issues are that bad. Tell the ortho to sharpen the knives!

Yeah man, they help a a reminder to keep your arm down but in a situation were you get off the bike no way to stop it.

I planned my surgery around a time that was mellow for work and I was at the desk not in the field. Plan for a good 10 days of not doing anything after the surgery. 2 months in a sling/by your side. 4 months to the day I was trail riding.

My guy made everything very tight and was painful at first but now I understand why he did it. I was lucky to use a sports ortho who works on many pro athletes and understood my hobbies.

Feel free to reach out for any more questions or info.

I had my shoulder done 3 years ago (I was 24), 6 month recovery time. It lasted about 6 months before I flat landed a jump and caused it to sublux again. Since that time, I have been really good about using both kt tape and the evs sb03 brace. I like that combo. I feel safe and haven't had any problems, or subluxations while riding with it after that. I use it for moto and mtb. Last month I had a mtb crash and blew my collarbone to 5 pieces and now have a rod through it. But from what I can tell, the labrum and tendons were largely fine.

I have heard that donjoy makes a really good shoulder brace, but I'm not sure how good it would be for moto.

How long would you guys recommend keeping your shoulder immobilized before starting to rehab it? I did mine a week ago and have been wearing my evs brace for it.

I tried one of those and absolutely hated it. It made me ride with improper form, which led to more potential crashes. I ditched it after three rides. I'm not sure it would have helped one bit anyway.

They scheduled my rehab appointments less than a week after my surgery. They told me it was better for long-term mobility.

mine started the day after surgery. Not much to rehab at first, just them moving the joint and me opening and shutting hand plus arm curls where allowed for many weeks.
