Hey, I currently ride a 2017 YZ125 that I’ve been on for a year and a half. I ride mostly tracks and was starting to notice a lack of power as I race b class. I’m 15 years old 170 pounds and 6’2. I put an exsaust and reeds on my bike and also changed the gear ratio. I love the bike it’s tons of fun but should I get a 250?

I can’t afford the maintence on a 250f though, I ride a lot and race a lot and I do my own engine rebuilds and 2 strokes are easy to maintain so I wanna stay 2 stroke

250f. Today's 250fs are a lot better than the ones 10 years ago. 40hrs no problem.

Go with a 250 two stroke. They are legal to race in every amateur 250 class, and power is more comparible to a 250F. You are getting destroyed racing a 125 smoker vs 250F's.

Buy a YZ250 smoker and level the playing field.

I put on 120 hours a season easily. So rebuilds on a 4 stroke are to expensive

Do you want girls dropping their panties every time they see you?
Do you want every girl within 50 miles chasing you through the pits?
Do you want to make every dude wish they were you?

If you answered yes to the above then your answer is yes.

This sums it up.

120 hours per year? Damn, wish I got to ride that much. So, you're looking at 3 top ends per year. Cheap with a 2 stroke.

Ignore anyone who tells you to buy a 250f Wink

I can't believe you guys are tearing these engines down at 40 hours. I have 65 on my FX350 and Im not even thinking about a tear down. Had about 70 on my 14 yz250f with no issues.

If he can't afford the maintenance what makes you think he can purchase an Alta? Less maintenance yes but they're not exactly cheap to buy.

Can do quite a bit of maintenance for the price difference of buying a YZ vs. an Alta.

If he's truly B class speed then 40 hours is pretty damn good. I wouldn't even say it's on the safe side... Just about right. I'd minimum re-ring at that point

Edit: Also, "tearing down" to me is a 2 hour top end job in my garage for $140~...

Get a 300 if you're not CC limited in whatever class you race. There's a lot more you can do with power characteristics and the extra power lets you ride it lower in the RPM range for better throttle control.

Then why even ask the question? 2 strokes are the holy grail of motocross and are making a hell of a comeback. Get the 250 and never look back.

I am fucking tired of people whining about maintenance. My kitchen table needs maintenance (pledge). My girl needs maintenance. My truck needs maintenance. Even those stupid altas need tires and fork seals and I’m assuming throttle cables. It’s just not part of the the equation. 250f is the correct answer. 250 smoker is also a fine answer. And if you can’t squirrel away an extra 100$ between the two stroke piston and four stroke piston before you accumulate 50-75 hours then you need another job. Or a better budget.

And x2 on these bikes being far superior to the versions of ten years ago. Don’t bro out in the pits revving them for the kids and they will
Last a long time. Keep your air filter fresh and your valves in spec and don’t think twice about it

Yes, get a YZ250. That's the most fun you will get for your money. 17 years worth of parts on eBay too.

KTM SX 150 as your next bike, which will be a huge upgrade in power, and then get a 250 2-stroke when you're a bit older.

250 2stroke. It actually takes skill to ride one and are way cheaper to maintain.

He said he doesn’t want to do a lot of maintenance. Transmissions aren’t cheap.
