I came across a good deal on a 2003 KLX110. It’s got the pro taper tall bars and Two bros exhaust on it, I only paid $200 for it. The kicker is locked at the moment, but I have been reading about the output shaft breaking and causing the kicker to lock up. I’m planning on pulling the motor and painting the frame and redoing everything as it sat outside in the elements of South Florida for a couple years, was just wondering if anyone could give me some other insight on these early pitbikes? Anything to replace/upgrade while I’m in there?

If you’re riding it get a cradle and over the peg brake pedal. Stiffer shock and fork springs too

Definitely get a cradle kit (can be had on Ebay for $50). It could save you from cracking the case. Ton's of mods available for these bikes and they are so fun to ride. You can also run a KX65 front end with a beefed up shock. Enjoy it. $200 is a great deal regardless of condition.

Springs are already on the way, last time I rode my friends bone stock 110 I almost broke my ankles like 20 times.

I thought $200 (in this market) was really good, even if it involves some motor work. I’ve done bottom ends in my 2 strokes and done some light work on street bikes so I don’t think splitting the cases on this will be too difficult for me. Will take a look at some cradle kits. Always wanted my own 110 instead of having to bum someone else’s at the races.

They are the same as the other years except
You can’t go full manual clutch and remove the auto clutch on the 02’s for some reason. I wouldn’t recommend the manual clutch I did it for my son while I was trying to find him a 65 and it feels like crap. His just has bars/triple
Clamp, pegs, over the top brake lever and a better rear shock. It’s super heavy but he rides it well. Keeps up with kids on way better bikes

Tried a 110L and didn’t really like it as much, how am I supposed to drink my monster on my way to signup at 7 am with a clutch?

If you do end up splitting the cases, all you have to do to upgrade the transmission to a 4 speed is change the shift drum. Everything else is already in there.

4th gear shift drum for KLX110.

I assume it’s worth the time and money? I’ll probably split the cases and check everything out for my own safety.

Yeah, If you’re splitting the cases definitely do the 4th gear drum, you could probably find one for like $50 or less. The 02-07 output shafts were weak, in 08 they fixed the issue, so you can get an 08+ OEM shaft and save some money compared to a BBR unit or something.

‘02 had issues but ‘03 to ‘09 are the same. Put in a HD output shaft and a 4 speed shift drum. Maybe even throw in a stroker crank while you have it apart.

Is the 08+ output shaft a direct fit? Or do I need to do anything to make it work?

Check out the website planet minis for tons of klx posts / mods suggestions etc
If we’re going to split the cases through in a four-speed shift drum heavy duty output shaft and a heavy duty shift Star

Previous owner did the sweet airbox delete mod, worth buying the whole airbox, or is there an advantage with just the pod?

I have a nice stock airbox $25 + the ride. Also have a shift drum if you need it. I’d say get a stroker crank but you’ll be waiting a long time. I’m currently waiting on 4 myself.

If you split the cases put in a Chp 2nd gear. Most of the riding will be in 2nd and the stock one wears out quickly. When I was into pit bikes I probably replaced 20+ 2nd gears.

I'll let you know about the airbox, thanks for reaching out!
