I have been on the side lines on this forum for awhile now. I have had about a 2 and half year break from riding, after riding 3-4 times a week for years and racing in B grade MX2.
I have decided to buy another bike now and ride for fun mainly just MX. I was going to go buy a new 18 350SXF today, in Australia the dealer gave me a deal for $12, 300 AUD ($9,410 USD). Then a friend told me about this 2012 KX250F that has been sitting in storage forever. Bike is in great condition and only had 15 hours on it, still has the stock tires, chain and sprocket. Comes with a full Yoshi system, aftermarket clamps and twinwalls. He wants $3,000 AUD ($2,295 USD)
I've always brought brand new bikes my whole life, but this seems pretty good. What were the 2012 KX250F like and compare them to the 250F's now?
Or just buy a new 350SXF?

In a year or so sell the 250 and buy a second hand late model 350sxf

And like Maverick said, if you're just going out there for fun, it's plenty good enough, plus you don't have to suffer the loss in value from riding a new bike for the first time. That's already been taken care of with the previous owner.
Looking at it practically and financially, the KXF is the better option.
But if you got in your mind that you wanna have a 350 than don't buy the 250 only because it's cheap.
Your situation sounds exactly like mine, 3 years ago. I was out of the game for a few years, so I picked up a 07 rm250 to get back into it. Then realised I wanted to race again, so I traded up to a 13 rmz450, I raced a season on that, and really got the bug for racing again, so traded up to a 16 rmz450 (only because I got a smoking deal on it)
Now I've got one of the nicest bikes I've ever owned and it didn't seem to hurt as much financially, because I traded up each year as my enthusiasm increased. I couldn't bring myself to spend 10k in one go, just to get back into riding.
And I got bit hard, as I lashed out on kit suspension, ti exhaust and all the fruit
If you can buy the 2018 and still do what you want then go for it. Depends in your financial situation.

Also, I don't think you mentioned what your last bike was. What year, model and size bike were you on before taking a break?
@maverick my last bike was a 2012 CRF250 with a PC mod motor (valves, cams, ported head, pipe, vortex ignition) and B kit FC suspension.
Been sitting a while so probably has old fuel and oil ... Does it start? May need some fluids flushed and new filters.
Enjoy the bike and Canada.
I met plenty of people from Ontario that never moved back east after spending time there.
It's something special alright, loved nearly every second of it.
