I have been on the side lines on this forum for awhile now. I have had about a 2 and half year break from riding, after riding 3-4 times a week for years and racing in B grade MX2.

I have decided to buy another bike now and ride for fun mainly just MX. I was going to go buy a new 18 350SXF today, in Australia the dealer gave me a deal for $12, 300 AUD ($9,410 USD). Then a friend told me about this 2012 KX250F that has been sitting in storage forever. Bike is in great condition and only had 15 hours on it, still has the stock tires, chain and sprocket. Comes with a full Yoshi system, aftermarket clamps and twinwalls. He wants $3,000 AUD ($2,295 USD)

I've always brought brand new bikes my whole life, but this seems pretty good. What were the 2012 KX250F like and compare them to the 250F's now?

Or just buy a new 350SXF?

That KX looks really clean. If you just want to go out there and have fun I say get that bike and save a ton of money.

Go for the Kawi The difference between old and new is not significant enough for the price difference. The capabilities with your left over cash will be better optimized via the Kawi.

For that much difference in cash go the kxf. highly doubt your fast enough to need to mod up a stock 250. So you'll.have 7k spare for susoension or riding gear or mortage repayments. Spend some money on riding lessons/ coaching if you want to get faster.

In a year or so sell the 250 and buy a second hand late model 350sxf

I would take new one. Everything is new and no problems you can just ride and not worry. Also 350f is way better bike than old Kawasaki.

KXF. It's a good bike and will keep up with newer model 250f's. I think around that era was the strongest motor Kawi has put in their 250f's.
And like Maverick said, if you're just going out there for fun, it's plenty good enough, plus you don't have to suffer the loss in value from riding a new bike for the first time. That's already been taken care of with the previous owner.
Looking at it practically and financially, the KXF is the better option.

You can't lose a lot of money on the kawa. If you ride it for only one year, you ride really cheap.
But if you got in your mind that you wanna have a 350 than don't buy the 250 only because it's cheap.

100% snap up the kxf! (Unless money us no issue, then I would get a new bike)

Your situation sounds exactly like mine, 3 years ago. I was out of the game for a few years, so I picked up a 07 rm250 to get back into it. Then realised I wanted to race again, so I traded up to a 13 rmz450, I raced a season on that, and really got the bug for racing again, so traded up to a 16 rmz450 (only because I got a smoking deal on it)

Now I've got one of the nicest bikes I've ever owned and it didn't seem to hurt as much financially, because I traded up each year as my enthusiasm increased. I couldn't bring myself to spend 10k in one go, just to get back into riding.

And I got bit hard, as I lashed out on kit suspension, ti exhaust and all the fruitLaughing

KX and spend some of the money you saved getting the suspension dialled, you will have a faster/better bike for you

If you are not buying that KX, where is it located, at $3000 I would pick it up advertise it for $5500 should sell for at least $4500 pretty quick and put that $1500 towards the new 350.

Id buy the kx and use the money you saved to build it up. Id bet that kx fully built with porting, pipe, remap, cams, A-kit suspension will go toe to toe with any brand new bike easily.

If you can buy the 2018 and still do what you want then go for it. Depends in your financial situation.

Where are you selling bikes that you can get $4500 for a 2012 250F? I've got a '16 450 that wouldn't fetch that.

Looks like he was talking Australian dollars whcih you need to stack a little higher than US dollars or GB pounds.

Go tell that to my buddy that has 2 2016s sitting in his garage blown up with under 20 hours.

Exactly. Hearing stories about dealers dropping KTM because they were taking too long to pay shops for all the warranty work also.

I'd say go with the KX250F (I owned one, great bike) You'll have plenty of money left over for hookers and blow.

Honestly if your goal is to simply go out there and enjoy yourself you don't need the latest and greatest bike to do that. The KX looks in good shape and like others have mentioned with the money saved get the suspension set up for you, buy some gear along with a quality helmet, go over the bike to make sure everything is in order, fuel it up and go ride.

Also, I don't think you mentioned what your last bike was. What year, model and size bike were you on before taking a break?

Thanks everyone, I am thinking about going and picking up the KXF and having some fun on that for the time being and using the extra money for my snow trip to Canada and Japan mid February, sell it then pick up the KTM when I get back.

@maverick my last bike was a 2012 CRF250 with a PC mod motor (valves, cams, ported head, pipe, vortex ignition) and B kit FC suspension.

I am always Leary about any used 250F and the stories it just had a new top end put in...... but that looks like its hardly ridden.

Been sitting a while so probably has old fuel and oil ... Does it start? May need some fluids flushed and new filters.

Going to Western Canada for a snowboard trip? You might not want to leave once you get there. I've never been myself but everyone I know that went all said the same thing and that it was they didn't want to come back.

Enjoy the bike and Canada.

I ended up spending 3 winters in western Canada.

I met plenty of people from Ontario that never moved back east after spending time there.

It's something special alright, loved nearly every second of it.

I would say that the KXF looks good to ride again, I have one YZF of 2006 since 2008 and I do not change it, I do not usually compete now,and it's a lot of money to buy a new one and I do not see so much difference in use with the new ones, it's enough money to keep it well, apart we already know each other well Smile

Depends on your financial situation. If you're Bill Gates' son I would get a new bike. If you're like us average minions I would go with the used bike.
