It was tossed around a lot in the past, and seems like a really appropriate subject right now. If I was Feld I'd throw the change in right now, it's the same for everyone. Just re designing promotional material that has all the wrong riders in it would cost a bunch. It wouldn't have solved KR94's problem, and it might not help this year if the injuries turn out to be too severe, but in this sport that eats it's young, it would seem to have a place. The Championships would be closer, and seasons wouldn't always be over.
Personally, not that I want things to happen like they have, but I have a raised Spock eyebrow as to how the season will go now. I think I’m even more stoked to watch the series, only because I think we could have multiple winners and a tighter points chase.

I'd rather see they make the tracks easier. Maybe that would make the racing closer. Less injuries. I dunno.
Anything but artificial stuff. It's already kinda lame that the points are weighted.
Factories are not usually on my list of stake holders I have any sympathy for, but when you think about the rider's contracts being paid while they have no rider, and the team expenses and bike costs that go on even without your top rider, you have to imagine they would be all over the idea.
Riders, the most important stakeholders get a shot to recover from injuries rather than realizing their season is shot and just waiting for the outdoors. When you realize how few entries there are to fill the gate, they need every rider they can get. Riders that miss the start of the series may be able to join later, whether injured or struggling to get a team together. Right now there is ET3, MM25, MS27, JH72, JS7 , RD5 , JB19, DM18, TB69, NS79, AC80, MB58, HM48, AP 981 and more that would benefit from this rule so far and we are on the 2nd race.
Fans would benefit from having riders return to the series rather than lay up and prep for outdoors. The top riders will still have the best scores, but at the end of the season you would still have more riders with at shot at the title.
It beats the heck out of a playoff or shoot out as a way to tighten the series.
It's already a shit show with some rounds being "Triple Crown" events and some not.
Pit Row
Shit happens, deal with it. Crashes, mechanicals, health, etc. all play a role in a championship. The best man/team wins it's that simple.
So... with the current super amazing points system we have, that I am sure some math major came up with after running through many different scenarios, we are lucky enough to go in to a meaningless Vegas the majority of the time. So with some throw away rounds you could have someone sit out the last couple rounds and still bring in the championship.
So I would say... just adding throw away rounds... no. It's not enough.
The Chase would at least allow guys that were hurt early in the season a chance to come back and compete for something meaningful over the last 5-7 races.
But depending on how you qualified for the Chase in Nascar, Musquin would be locked in because he won A1, while Tomac would still need to win a Qualifying race to get in.
Don’t take this as me pushing for a chase format. I’m actually good with the current format, but it does kind of suck the top 2 guys coming in are basically done now. At the same time though, it makes things interesting with Anderson showing some speed, and the comeback of Roczen. If Anderson racks up some wins early, Kenny gets back going around half way, then Tomac and Marvin comeback battling for wins, it will really shake things up down the stretch.
Watching a rider make the best of a bad day shows the character of a champion.
Fight every race, every lap - all season long.
