Is there really such a thing as a Privateer in SX anymore??

I know we count on some true privateers qualifing for the night show this year, but how many will we actually see in the main... If we go by chris o'neil's classification of a true privateer I would be very surprised to see any..

this is a very interesting subject. i still wonder this:

the year chisholm and stewart were on the same team, chisholm was in the running for top privateer? well why wasn't stewart? neither belong there.

Are these real privateers buying their bikes or just using them and turning them back into the dealer for resale?

It's hard to tell but even if they are getting free bikes the riders I listed are not factory supported riders.

I've made a list of who I classify as a privateer based on these guidelines.

1. Salary or performance bonuses not including contingency.
2. Mechanic who gets a salary.
3. Free flights, rental cars, and hotels.
4. Semi to pit out of, stocked with personal parts and supplies. (Not Warthog)
5. Free bikes and parts.
6. Access to test factory tracks.

If a rider can check off 4 out of 6 of these then I don't consider them a privateer.

Sometimes this can get very blurred and confusing but this is just fantasy. Everyone knows that this is how the system should be except for the people that hand out the awards! Unsure

I can vouch that Jason Hussey has to buy his bikes. He was riding the bike he took to Vegas at fair races this summer too. We sponsored 8 racers who were true privateers, with no free bikes or anything, who raced either the SX or MX series in 2010, including Jason, who scored points in SX, and Hunter Clements, who scored points in MX. Several of the others either made the night show or made the motos but didn't score points.

Hey this is Chris Howell. You have me tied for 11th in the West Coast Lites Privateers. Out of the six guidelines you have for being a privateer I can not check one. And I know that a few people on that list can check at least a couple.

My dad bought me my bike to race this year and payed for my entries. I got a job last fall to make money to go pursue my dream. I lived out of my box van in socal for over two months and stayed at a friends house at times. I was my own mechanic at the races. I am a true privateer. and I made two mains. I plan on doing the whole West Coast series next year, in my box van again. I love to race and I'm determined to make it.

I do have a lot of great sponsors that help me out with what they can. I'd like to thank Specailty Recreation and Marine, Fly, Devol, DR. D, Hyper X, Pro Wheel, Blitz, Bridgestone, KW, Wiseco, Fusion, and Steffy MX Schools.

Glad to hear you are doing good! So are you agreeing with the system? I'm not sure what your writing hear besides agreeing with me that you are a true privateer?

Good luck on next year and if you need help with something feel free to send me a message and I will see what I can do.

Ya I was agreeing with you. I know a bunch of people who are considered a privateer by the industry but they get free bike and pit out of a semi of some sort of satellite team. Its nice to see people helping us out. It is greatly appreciated.
